Carry on bag and personal item :size issue

I am flying from Jacksonville to New Delhi, India via Washington DC (United) and Frankfurt (Lufthansa) and I just wanted to check whether the following dimensions are okay for the personal item baggage.

For a personal item I am carrying a duffel bag and the total dimensions of the bag are 19x12x12. The carry on item is a stroller sizing up to 22x14x12.

I want to know whether I will be stopped by the personnel at the gate or not? I have seen a few people carry such a combo on airplanes ,wondering whether it will work for us or not.

We are moving homes (living in Jax since past 3 years! ) and it is just so difficult to pack your entire home in just 2-3 bags!! So confused what to do.. Please help!!

Check the airlines' website for their carryon dimensions and regulations. If they won't allow the stroller on the plane, they will gate-check it and you pick it up as you depart the plane.

tinzer,

The airline will let you roll the stroller up to the plane and then they will check it for you.

For baggage allowances you really need to go to the website for your airline and read their restrictions. A personal item usually means a purse, laptop case, small duffle or overnight. I'm not current on the number of carry on pieces allowed for international flights. It used to be 2.

No one here can really predict what gate personnel will do outside the rules.

Good luck and have a safe trip home!

About the stroller, they will stow it for you and then will give it back to you as you exit the plane. You won't have to wait to collect it at baggage claim.

Different airlines have different policies about gate checking.

It's common for US airlines to return gate checked items to you as you deplane. I've never seen Lufthansa do the same - gate checked items seem to be sent to baggage claim on LH. That means you may not have use of the stroller at FRA airport.

Some airlines are now not allowing strollers to be gate checked. They are not charging for them, but require checking at the counter.
I don't think you will get a "personal item" of the size you want--it's a carryon.
Call the airlines and explain the whole scenario to them. At most you are looking at paying for an extra bag. If so, get another duffel, put the stroller in it, and put some more of what you need in with it.

I think you're going to have problems in europe. The size restricitions on european airlines are typically smaller than in the US and I have seen them being strictly enforced. Agree that they will gate check the stroller - you can;t take that on (and it;s too big anyway).

Your duffle is also too big for euro airlines. Go to the websites to check exact sizes and realize that flights typically have every seat taken and those boarding late often don;t have room for enen carry-ons that are the proper size and they too are gate-checked. So besides getting the right size make sure you get on the plane early.

And a "personal item" is a purse or a briefcase - much smaller than your duffle.. the size you're talking about is a carry-on - and an oversize one at that (usually you are allowed 19 X 14 X 8 or so).

The united flight should be less of an issue, it is the overseas Lufthansa flight that will really govern what you can take:

Thanks a lot everyone... I checked out the website earlier, and wasnt sure about carrying a duffel bag as my personal item.. Now I am carrying a tote purse instead of the duffel .. Had to discard somethings but thought we could always shop in India. Thanks a ton for your suggestions and all the help!!
