Car rentals at Big Island and Kauai

We're spending our honeymoon at Big Island and Kauai next July, 6 nights each. We intend to rent a soft top jeep at Big Island and a motorbike at Kauai. Should we reserve them beforehand or should we rather rent them on location? Which rentals would you recommend? If you have any other advice concerning this, I'd really like to hear it =) Thanks!

We were told by a rental agent in Hawaii that the best rates are offered if you have AAA card. We did this and I did not find anything cheaper on the net. I am ususally good at finding deals on the net.

You may want to rethink the motorbike on Kauai. Even though you're going in July, you're going to one of the wettest places on the planet. Rainstorms are usually brief but I wouldn't want to be caught on a motorbike in one.

We are going to Hawaii tomorrow (yahoo!). We reserved a ford explorer or similar at Hertz for 6 days for $200. That is a GREAT deal. It's their Freedom rate and I don't know how long it's good for, but if you can reserve it in advance and lock in a price like this, you should. Check out their website. The promo rate code is FRDM.

I would rent an SUV on the big island but maybe not a soft top because you will find you spend more time on the highway and the noise would be irritating.

Have an awesome honeymoom!

Last August, we reserved cars on both Maui and the Big Island - and then called another company when we got there to see if we could get better rates on site (the original quote for a Jeep had been $300 for a week when we called some time in advance!). Sure enough, on site, someone quoted us less than $200 a week, so we cancelled our original reservation and went with the new one. Remember, car reservations aren't binding and there is no penalty for cancelling them.

By the way, we absolutely LOVED our orange Jeep tooling around Maui. But on the Big Island we rented an Explorer for a larger group. Shel already indicated that the Big Island was more spread out and that is correct, and you may want to reconsider if noise bothers you... but we took many long trips on Maui in our Jeep and were in heaven. Bring a CD adaptor if you want your own music!

Thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it! Now I have some idea where to start off on. I can't wait to get to Hawaii. Thanks!
