We are flying in/out of Denver but plan to spend the first two nights in Denver before driving throughout the state. Do I need a rental car in the city of Denver? I can save money if I pick up the rental car two days after our arrival in Denver instead of getting it at the airport.
Make sense?

We recently spent several days in downtown area of Denver and while we did have a car as we drove there, we did not use it in town. Easy to get to most tourist sites in the downtown area. We stayed at Residence Inn on Champa and were able to take advantage of the 16th St Mall's free bus.
Denver has decent public transit. The 16th St Mall shuttle is free and runs the full length of the mall every few minutes. You can buy an all day pass for light rail for $5 which handles some outlining areas and there is good bus service to the zoo and natural science museum.
