So, we booked our tickets a while ago but didn't book a car rental. Now when I run searches on car rentals, the cheapest rate is $95 per day plus tax. Is there a shortage of car rentals? Should I have booked it a long time ago?
We are visiting a friend and I misunderstood what she was telling me earlier. I thought we could rely on them for transportation, but it sounds that we will need a car.
Do you have any suggestions for cheaper car rentals?

I've used http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/ in the past--they might be cheaper. Good luck.
thanks, martym. I will check it out. I am also finding a slightly lower rate on Costco.com. Still fairly high.
I found myself in a similar predicament in Boston during "move-in week" - it is supply and demand at work.
If you are staying in town you may not need a car every day. Much is walkable if going to Waikiki and Ala Moana, for example.
Not sure if you are adventuresome might the Bus which has reasonable schedule- but it can eat up time depending on route and time of day.
I wonder if your friends are willing to share the vehicle, let you drop them off at work, etc.
Leasing a Smart car for a month might cost less than renting from Alamo but I am sure there are many stipulations and probably not viable but a thought.
Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.
It's even worst on Maui and The Big Island. TBI will completely run out of rental cars over the Christmas holiday.
Yes, you should have booked months ago and Yes, there is a shortage of rental cars during this season of peak demand.
Wow, I just checked Hotwire, and even on there (a "discount" site with which we've always had good luck, including on our trip last month to Maui), the prices are around $100 a day. Yikes!
So discount Hawaii has a rate of $300 per week, which I jumped on right away. Is there a catch? I was expecting this kind of a rate to begin with but I know I am afraid it is too good to be true.
SF, Hirsute is where I started also. Shocking, isn't it?
No, DHCR is fine, they only book from the majors, I used them last time on Kauai and got a nice Avis intermediate.
Of course, I meant hotwire not hirsute. Damn autocorrect on my mobile.
