Car Rental in Honolulu

Going to Honolulu and want to know if it is worthid to rent a car and drive around or just take cabs. What sites are a must see? Only there a day and a half before a cruise.

yes would definitely rent a car, got a deal on a cab to the north shore at $60 before tip when I was without a car. Must see sights.
Places that will be a pain to access via "the bus"

North Shore Heiau, pineapple fields and alii birthing ground along the way
Byodo Temple Windward side
Makapu Light house lookout Windward
Pali overlook Mauka between Honolulu and Windward
Tantalus near Pali
Diamond Head drive following past Hanama bay towards Sandy beach. You will want to drive and stop not plan separate trips separate days which is what you will need to do with bus or just wait 1hour each stop if not more.
Hanama bay it is best to take a tour in as the gate keepers are given a lot of room to discriminate who goes in and our experience was bad. … another story and letter to Travel Bureau of Hawaii just take a day tour or public bus here.
Otherwise park down a hill and pay $2 a pop to get driven in by limo. Can't believe the state support this but this is what we saw. No walking in unless you were local.

Lisa,

We drove past the giant waves at Pipeline and Sunset Beach yesterday. This time of year they are awesome!

With just a day and a half I would spend some time enjoying Waikiki and then maybe take a Circle Island tour. Parking a rental car in Waikiki is an extra expense and might not be worth the hassle. There are many trans companies that run Circle Island tours but they hit the highlights and you follow their schedule.

Circle Island tours will typically take you to Pali lookout, past Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Halona Blow Hole (stopping for pictures only), around the scenic North Shore past Chinaman's Hat, Kualoa, Sunset Beach, Dole Retail Store in the pineapple fields and back to Waikiki. Some Circle Island tours start the day at Pearl Harbor and some also stop at Byodo-in Temple and Haleiwa town on the North Shore.

Type "Oahu Circle Island Tour" into your search engine and you'll have lots of choices and prices. We also enjoy having dinner at Sam Choy's, Alan Wong's, and Todai, all near Waikiki.

Do you really want to stay put if you are restricted on a boat. Waikiki is calmer in non summer months but I think it is worth a skip if you rent a car drive, picnic, do a tour at Iolani Palace get a sense of history of where you are. I am not sure I would want to be on a tour on the clock of others. Very easy to find your way around the island with a good map.

If it were me. I would get up early eat breakfast at eggs and things or in Hotel to save time. I would pop over to Iolani for a tour next head for the windward side via pali. But first Pick up some of Leonard Malasadas and coffee as you head towards the Pali this only if you have not already made a pig of yourself at breakfast. Finish eating before you get out to take in the hill top view of Honolulu from the pali look out. Next go to Byodo temple incredible period replica of 800 year old Japanese temple with the back drop of raiser sharp green peeks. Feed the many hungry carp and don't forget those birds that will eat right out of your hands. ...press on stopping for a light lunch in Kailua if you are hungry picnic basket in Waimanalo beach park not crowded and sprawling unlike the more popular lanikai. Kailua beach park is another option but my fav is Waimanalo

If you love this beach and I don't know how you could not, mountains in the backdrop clear turquoise sea in front of you, stay for the day. If you want to pack in more sights just stay for lunch then I would head for the Makapu light house lookout if you are there in good time (before the strong heat) I would hike the paved road to the light house. If not just park near look out and look out, sweeping coastal view here.

Get back in the car head for Sandy beach stop and watch the boogie boarders next stop off at the blow hole next Hanama Bay stay for a few hours if there is room stay don't sweat it if you miss this place it can be a nice snorkeling spot but the crowds are annoying as in the callous disregard for the eco system in this area.

Towards the end of my day I would head back to hotel freshen up have dinner at Alan Wong's, Roy's, 3666 or Sam Choy's. As for Parking I think we paid 10 dollars a day it was worth the convenience. Check out Hawaii Travel Bureau calendar for events we went to bon dances and made in Hawaii festival at the Blaisdale. Guests I was with were not pleased with Waikiki and could not get out of there quick enough.

For your half day you could hang out on Waikiki but I doubt you will want to after you see just these beaches.

Another drive is the Diamond head drive leading around the coast morning will provide many wind surfers that seem to disappear into the distance, quite mesmerizing to watch. Quick and easy to get here also, we did it just 40 minutes before we were due at the airport and got the best color pictures of our vacation.

The two most popular visitor destinations on Oahu are Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center. I work in the travel trade in Hawaii and we have customers staying on a neighboring island that make a short hop to Oahu for those two places and to do some shopping in the Waikiki boutiques.

If this is your first time to Oahu, though, I agree with the comments posted above. Drive around and see the sights or take a circle island tour and enjoy a nice dinner in town.
