Car rental

We intend to go to New York and after three days there, we go for North alongside the Coast, untill Boston.
After that we will visit the Niagara falls and Mount Caillac. The total days for the rental are 14 to 15 days.
Can you tell us the cheaper company or site to rent?

Best regards,
Jorge

I am thinking you may not be a US citizen. You will need to shop for a car rental with your dates in mind. And will you return the car to the beginning of your rental. There is no way to know what will be the cheapest place without this information. You can start on Travelocity for an idea about price for the size car you want. Then you may be able to shop on Priceline for a better price. If you are not a US citizen, there may be insurance surcharges.

Cannot even say until we know the dates and size of car desired.

In the meantime, look at http://www.carrentalsavers.com and be sure to factor in any applicable discounts you may find.

Jorge... you will find it cheaper to Bus between your cities and rent a car if you need one...

the Company MEGABUS will transport you from New York to Boston for as little as $1 per passenger... the ride is about 4 hours ... once you are in Boston, you could do city tours or rent a car for exploring... then you could travel Boston to Niagara Falls on Megabus and rent a car there...

If you rent a car in NYC, you will also have to plan for large parking fees in the major cities.... its better to travel there and not park the car there...

There is also Amtrak if you prefer trains, or air travel...

I would wait until you are ready to leave Boston to pick up the rental car then drive from there.

It depends on your itinerary. If you are going straight from NYC to Boston bus or train makes more sense than car (a car is useless in Boston). If you will be making stops along the way a car is the only way to go.

there is no one cheapst company - it depends on the type of car you want, your dates and how long you will have it. I strongly urge you to try to arrange some sort of deal from wherever you are - and be sure you get a price that includes taxes and insurance (together these can be 1/3 of the cost of renting).

Thank you very much.
I live in Portugal ,Europe and our dates t will be from 22th August to 4th September.
We will pick and delivery the car in the same city (New York).
We will make stops during the journey to Boston.
For comparision from Fodors site and our local companies (Hertz, Budget and Avis included), the prices are more expensive.
I also try another site "economycarrentals.com".
Do you know it?
Best regards,
Jorge

"we go for North alongside the Coast, untill Boston."
There is no reasonable coastal road from NYC to Boston and if you take the coastal road some of the way, it will take forever.

Driving from Boston to Niagara Falls is a very very long trip.

Please tell us how many you are in total and whether there are kids and when (what time of year) you're planning to do this trip so we can help. From where do you leave to go home (wherever home is)? One way car rentals are always pricier AND some car rental companies don't allow their cars over the Canadian border. At minimum, taking a rental car over the border may cause more problems.

mclaurie, I assumed the OP would be taking I-95 and perhaps stopping in places along the way. Also, he replied just prior to your post that they will be round-trip NYC.

I'm definitely in agreement that you do not need a car between NYC and Boston. BUT, since round-trip car rentals are cheaper than one-way, it's fine to do the drive. Hopefully with the car you can stop off between NYC and Boston to see some nice beaches! (The drive total between these two cities is about 5 hours.) Just make sure not to do it: (A) at rush hour; (B) on a Friday; or (C) on the 1st or last of the month, because in the summer that is when rental leases are up and the roads get even more congested!

Jorge, I also assume you know better than to have the car rental during your time in NYC. Pick it up on your last day, as you begin your travel to Boston. In fact, do look into reserving a car outside of the city, for example in nearby Stamford, CT. There was a thread here recently that showed how much cheaper it can be!

At which airport will you be arriving/departing Portugal?

Here is the thread I just mentioned. Even though that poster had a different overall route, reading through it might be helpful. Regardless, definitely scroll down to where NorthwestMale lists sample prices of car rentals from various locations. Additionally, myself and others explained how to get out to Stamford once that poster decided to do so:

We live in Portugal-Europe and we could be 6 or 9 Persons(three teenagers and 6 adults), as three of them will decide next month if thy go or not.
The travel will be for 14/15 days, in last week of May and first of June.
Here is our calendar:3 days in New York, then rent a car on the last day and go for Niagara Falls, visit Montreal and move to the State of Maine; Bar Harbor, Mount Washington- New Hampshire, Boston, where we will visit Cape Cod and Marthas Vineyard, and return to New York.

Best regards,

Jorge

Is Niagara Falls an absolute must? In addition to the problems that might exist going into Canada and back (both the rental car and re-entry into the US ---- I don't know if either one is a problem, just suggesting they might be), Niagara Falls is a very long distance from both Manhattan and Montreal, in the wrong direction (Niagara Falls is about an 8-hour drive northwest of Manhattan, whereas Montreal is due north of Manhattan).

If you were willing to cut out Niagara Falls, you could spend 4 days in New York, then pick up the car and drive up to Montreal (same issues regarding car rental and re-entry), 2 days in Montreal, then work your way back to NYC -- 2-3 days in New Hampshire/Vermont, 2-3 days in Boston, a couple of days or more on Cape Cod/Martha's Vineyard, then drive back to NYC to drop off the car.

thats alot of driving --its 750 miles from Naigara falls to bar harbor, and with 9 people youll either need 2 cars,or a huge van (which will be expensive--ive been to all those places. Niagara Fall is nice, but youll see all you need in 1/2 . I do like Montreal alot, but you can see alot in NYC/Boston/Maine/New Hampshire. If this is your first trip here, you should consider concentrating on the East Coastmaybe go to DC instead of Monteal et al, and save youreslf 25 hours behind the wheel

NationalCar.com will probably have the best rate for a citizen of Portugal. The rate should include Collision Waiver and Liability Insurance. National is a well-known long-established company and they have locations in downtown boston or at the Boston Logan airport. Check the rates at both as they can vary quite a bit, especially once "airport fees" are added.

Rates in New York City may be quite high...some people take a bus or train into New Jersey or Connecticut to rent a car.

There are no affordable rental vehicles for 9 persons plus luggage. It will be more economical to rent two cars.

The savings on a two-week rental is $400 per car, renting from Stamford Connecticut instead of New York City. However, I'm not sure how much 6 or 9 train tickets to Stamford will cost.

Niagara falls is an 8 hour drive, then almost 10 hours from there back to Boston. You're basically taking 2 of your 14 days just driving back and forth to see Niagara Falls. You'll have to decide if this is worth your time.

OK - you can stuff 6 people and luggage in a large SUV - but you must have little luggage and you will be packed in. For 9 people you will need some sort of van. These will be expensive. Also you need to be sure they will let you take the vehicle into Canada.

Many european want to see Niagara Falls. I'm a native New Yorker and never saw it until I was about 45 - on a road trip to Toronto. A couple of thoughts - to drive from NY to the Falls is 8 or 9 hours - more to get to the Canadian side (and that's where the bet views, hotels and activities are). You need to be sure that your paperwork allows you to enter Canada and then to renter the US (not sure how this works).

Suggest you map out the trip including time as well as mileage (our speed limits are typically lower than yours).

this is early for the season in Maine - and you may find it very chilly - esp at night. And going in the water anyplace will be very cold this early (this is the North Atlantic without the gulf stream).

Your trip is very busy for the amount of time you have - so I suggest laying it out night by night - putting in drive times (go to yahoo maps) and do allow time for traffic in/near cities - and then see how it works out. And do remember that traveling with 9 people will definitely slow you down.

To fit it all in, you could fly "open jaw" into Toronto and out of NYC, but I'm sure it's not cheap. I'm also not sure at all how you'd manage the car rental in that situation! Organized tour to Niagra Falls then pick up a rental car on the US side? Probably a logistical nightmare... Oh, and that still doesn't include Montreal.

I have heard that the falls are much better from the Canadian side. (Count me as one of those New Yorkers who have never been, though nyt I still have a few years to see it before I'm 45 LOL.) Adding Canada into your trip will definitely add the time needed to cross the border - for all nine of you.

Even without the falls, you have a lot of places you want to visit in 2 short weeks with fairly long driving distances in between! Try using Google Maps to plan your routes: their maps have great features like the ability to drag the route line to a different road and it will automatically recalculate. (It even prevents you from planning a route on a road closed for construction.) You can also customize and save them for future use.
