Car needed in New Orleans?

First time visit and wondering if a car is needed in NO, we'll be staying for a long weekend and not sure if we should get a car? Thought maybe we'd try a plantation or swamp tour or some other interesting things that might not be right in NO.
Staying right off of Canal St, if we have a car is there street parking of reasonable]y priced lots to park in?
thanks for any advise

Hi vacaman2,

A car is not NEEDED for New Orleans; I've visited on a few occasions without a car, staying in the Garden District and having a great time (the French Quarter or Faubourg Marigny tend to be preferred by the car-less visitors). Without a car, you can potentially do a swamp tour or a plantation with an organized tour (such as Gray Line).

This said, if you want to visit outside of the city (such as a plantation) on your own schedule, a car will be necessary.

Have a great trip! Daniel

You're staying "right off" Canal St, you don't need a car. A swamp or plantation tour will have a meeting place or pick up at your hotel (check the specific tour).

I'd definitely go without a car. if you want to drive to tour some plantations or do a swamp tour (as opposed to getting picked up by an organized tour), just rent a car for the day.

No car necessary. You can walk or take the bus if you want to travel out a bit. Or even take a taxi.

I echo everything everyone else has said. If you're staying off Canal, you're walking distance or a short street car ride away from a lot of areas.
