Cape May or OC for 3 nights - 50th birthday
I'm turning 50 the end of this month (gulp!) and my husband, daughter, and I will be traveling from Kentucky to New Jersey to spend time with family for the "big event." My husband and I would like a two or three-night getaway (leaving our 10-year-old with Mom and Dad) in either Ocean City or Cape May. Having spent many summers in OC, we're familiar with the city itself but not the hotels or B&Bs. The hotels are ridiculously pricey, so a B&B may be a better - and nicer - choice. We've never spent much time in Cape May, so I'm not at all familiar with the town, how it's laid out, and cannot tell from the B&B addresses what is close to the beach, nicely located, etc.
The # of B&Bs is somewhat overwhelming! How to choose? We'd like one that is under $200 a night, a short walk to the beach, good breakfast food, private bath, and not on a highly busy street. One with a porch to sit on - either private or communal - would be really nice. A pool would be great, although most B&Bs aren't going to have pools. The plan is to relax on the beach, read novels, eat a nice lunch, eat a great dinner, and have a few drinks. It'd also be nice if we're located somewhere where parking isn't a huge problem and weren't not constantly hunting for a spot, especially at the B&B.
OK, this might be a tall order to fill, but if you've got any suggestions, we'd love to hear them!
Signed - 49 for just a little bit longer.....

For the location and the food, you can't beat Carroll Villa on Jackson Street, both of which are as good as it gets. Virtually seconds from the beach, seconds from the center of the town. Food is wonderful, since it houses the Mad Batter as well. Should be well in your price range -- ask for specials.
The street is reasonably quiet, BUT there is no parking as is true of most centrally located B&Bs. I don't know that you really need one for what you have planned, and I think they offer some sort of off location parking option.
There is no pool. There is really no porch, since it's taken up by the restaurant. Last time I was there, there was a back garden area -- you may want to check if you contact them.
The rooms are quite Victorian, and I believe they all have private baths and AC, and probably more amenities. Very clean. Very pleasant.
With your reservation you get a voucher for breakfast. That means you can pick what you want, AND you're not limited to a set menu, or a set time. If you want to have breakfast at noon, you can do that. Seems to me they have happy hour in the bar, and give you a discount if you eat dinner there.
Your get away sounds much like what I did for years. Breakfast, beach, lunch, beach, cocktails, nap, dinner. I actually started staying at Carroll Villa when a double was $25 off season, you could park right out front, the shared bathroom was down the hall if that tell you anything. Ideal in so many respects, but with the drawbacks I mentioned. The Mad Batter is excellent (but not cheap, so that dinner discount comes in handy).

I think you would enjoy Cape May. An excellent resource for B&Bs is Tripadvisor.com. Number one B&B in Cape May is the Queen Victoria but there are many others that are also great. I think that this website will start you there: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...ew_Jersey.html
Have a Happy Birthday.
