Cape May hotel suggestions

This is our first time to Cape May - two adults, no kids. We like a combination of great location, cleanliness and good prices. We checked out the suggestions on this site but they were either booked or not for us. Necessary to stay on beach? What amenities should we look for? Anything else we should know? Thanks
