Cape cod, Vermont and Newyork

Looking to travel to Boston October 10 then travelling around Cape Cod then across Vermont hopefully to see foliage then down to Long Island and end in New York for a few days which would be around 28 October. Will this be workable. Have been to Boston before so no sightseeing needed there. Also what weather can I expect.
Thanks

For October 10 you should head to VT first for foliage. It should be peak color in some areas around that date. It could be beautiful with cold night and warm days but keep in mind a few years ago it snowed on Halloween. A rare event but possible. Cape Cod is not known for foliage but there should be some color. You will only go a few hours out of your way to do VT first. Color starts north and goes south. Some places have foliage festivals over Columbus Day weekend. If you are flying out of Boston, I would do Cape Cod last.

You could make a loop north going I93 out of Boston to NH then I89 to VT. I89 is actually fairly scenic. Then, explore VT heading south to western MA and to Cape Cod. If you didn't make any stops, that loop could be done in a long day of driving.

I love going to the Cape at that time of year, but expect it to be cold at night and not really swimming season. The up side is there are no crowds, you can park in most of the restricted lots to hike along the beach or through the dunes.

The whale watches end sometime in October, so if that interests you check the dates and plan accordingly.

Thanks for that suggestion. how would start Boston then go to Burligton. Have two nights there then on North Conway for White Mountains. Then go back down to Portland then into Cape Cod. We then want to make our way to New York possibly a visit to The Hamptons on way. We then want to get rid of hire car when in New York. What do you think.
Thanks

Foliage in the White Mountains will probably be past peak by Oct 10 while Burlington will still have some time left, I think go North Conway first then over to Burlington. Go south either along Lake Champlain or further east on Rt 100. Connect with I89 back to Concord NH. GPS will tell you Rt 101 to Portsmouth as fastest way to the coast but it much more scenic to take Rt 4 from Concord NH east to Portsmouth NH than I95 to Portland. But, Portsmouth is a fairly good substitute for Portland. It depends on how much time and miles you want to add to your trip. Then to Cape Cod. Southern route to NY should still be pretty later in October but not sure how much longer.

When you head north from Boston on I93 to the White Mountains, it's going to start looking nice by the time you get north of Manchester NH. There will be colorful foliage along the way but you start to get glimpses of distant hills and mountains. By the time you get to Plymouth NH you are in the mountains. Darn, went to Conway a couple of weeks ago and can't remember our route. I think we got off at exit 23 in Meredith NH and traveled a bit along Lake Winnipesaukee and eventually connected with Rt 16 north. Meredith is a very pretty town and popular.

Hi at last found time to get back to trying to sort our holiday out. We decided we might like to stay in ogunquit before we travel across to Conway. It will be our wedding anniversary so looking for a nice bed and breakfast with walking distance to a good restaurant. Has anyone stayed there. Thanks.

At that time of year things are stating to shut down in the Hamptons. Many places will still be open on the weekends but during the week some restaurants, etc will be closed for the season. Walking on chilly beaches can be fun but make sure the place you stay gives you a parking permit for the beaches - except for montauk and Hither Hills State Park the beaches are either for town residents or the property of the uber wealthy.

You could drive into LGA or JFK and drop the car there and then hop public transit into the city.

Note that in Central Park the leaves usually turn around Nov 1 since the city is much warmer than surrounding areas.

Thanks we do want to see fall colours. As we will be flying into Boston from uk late afternoon we only want to drive short distance for first night. We could make way to Burlington next morning. Would travelling to Manchester then Burlington work. We could then drive across Kancamagus highway and go on to Conway then to Laconia area and take in Meriedith. Then to Ogunquit then down to the Cape. Does this sound good and see fall colours. Thanks

Despite being further north, I think Burlington color might be later than White Mountains. Do you mean Manchester Vt, NH or MA? Manchester NH to Burlington VT is an easy day trip with time for stops. The Norwich Inn in Norwich VT is not far off I89, has it's own restaurant but also a wonderful restaurant across the street. Several Fodorites have stayed there.

If you go north from Boston on I93 I think it makes more sense to go to Laconia then Meredith then further north for the Kancamagus Hwy across to Conway. From the Meredith area you can do the Kanc to Conway and back again in half a day with very little stopping. Add more time if you want to go to North Conway which is very picturesque.

From Conway it's probably an hour to Portland ME then south to Ogunquit via I95. Yes, from there it would be logical to head to the Cape.

Or go up thu VT to Burlington then over to Meredith. You can skip Laconia unless you really want to see the Weirs Beach area. Check on color at that point. My favorite route is Meredith to Center Sandwich to Tamworth to Conway. Slightly lower elevation might still have color if the Kanc doesn't. Color around Oqunquit might be ok but southern Maine isn't really known for foliage. You might check Yankee Magazine's website for suggested routes. From Boston north, there should be a lot of color right along I95 since it is very wooded. There is also nice color along Rt 495 if you circumnavigate around Boston to see more trees and less office buildings.

Thanks for help think we have route sorted now. We are thinking of dropping car off at LGA as suggested. Is it quite easy to do. Also thinking of flying Jet Blue from LGA to Florida. Are they an OK airline.

JetBlue, after a rough start in the early days, has turned into the only airline I look forward to flying. Get on their email list for amazingly cheap advance fairs.

I can't quite tell where you are on the Hamptons but it is not on your way to NY unless you take the ferry from New London, CT, to Long Island,

Yes, JetBlue is fine.

You do not need to return to NYC/LGA to fly to FLA - JetBlue and Southwest fly non-stop to various FL airports from many different small/med sized airports in the northeast.

If you want to explore that angle you can look into flying out of White Plains NY, Stewart-Newburgh NY, Albany NY, or Hartford CT to name a few.

Itinerary sorted but trying to find accommodation. When we are at Cape we fancied day trip to Martha's Vineyard. Would you stay near ferry terminal. Is there parking available there. Any good B and B s nearby. Also when you get onto Martha's Vineyard is it easy to get round island or should we take a tour.
Thanks again.

The parking is in a remote lot with a shuttle bus. We planned extra time to get there not knowing how long it would take to park and shuttle. It was September so we were able to get a cottage in a condo type of setting, almost on the water, for a long weekend so staying there was worth the distance to travel to the ferry.

Oak Bluffs fit our schedule. We did a private van tour around when we first arrived. Then just wandered and explored.

Just finished our tour and loved it and we hit the peak colours in Vermont and NH.
We arrived Boston after long haul flight and drove to Bedford NH. Stayed 1 night at Hampton Inn. We then went on to Waterbury and stayed 2 nights Fairfield Inn and Suites. Very nice. We did tour around Stowe where scenery and colours beautiful. We did a tour of Trapp family home which was quite interesting if you are interested in Sound of Music. If not drive to their car park which is free for wonderful views. We travelled from there through white mountains then down to Meridith. Stayed 2 nights Tuckernut Inn. Old, quaint, thin walls.very nice hosts and if you like that type of accommodation good but thought expensive for what you got. Did scenic tour around lake. Very picturesque. Then we went on to Ogunquit a lovely seaside town. Stayed at The Colonial Inn for 2 nights which was very nice. Lovely cliff walks and beach. Had good lunch at Jackies Too and excellent dinner at Five O shore road. We then spent 2 nights in Falmouth in Cape Cod stayed at Inn on the sound. Very good lovely rooms with ocean views and excellent breakfasts. We did a day trip to Martha's Vineyard. We then stayed 4 nights Eastham to visit rest of Cape. Stayed Eagle Wing which was excellent and good value. We then went on to Rhode Island.stayed at Wyndham long wharf. Very nice apartment. Did the scenic drive including mansions and cliff walk. We then decided to drive into New York as car hire place just three blocks from Pearl Hotel where we were staying. We had brilliant weather with just a couple of rainy days and no crowds on the Cape. Thanks again for your help in making this a lovely vacation.

I hope you bought a lottery ticket -- very few people have as much good fortune as you did!

Thanks for reporting back.
