Cape cod and Acadia

Hi

Am planning to visit both places in the week of April 27 - May 2. Purpose of trip is to relax. Will be coming from quite hectic trip before heading for Cape cod and/or Acadia. I would be traveling from Boston.

Few questions:

1. Are both the places doable? Will it be too hectic?
2. I believe, this year has been quite harsh in terms of snow. Thoughts please on how the drive would be and if travel would eat maximum time?
3. If the answers the above questions are negative then which place of the two should I prefer?

Cheers

If you want to avoid hectic, pick one, not both. Winter weather has nothing to do with it - it would be a long full-day drive from Cape to Acadia. Only if you find all day in a car relaxing, then do it.

Cost expectations? What do you want to do? Both places at this time of year can be damp, raw and grey. Some seasonal restaurants will be closed, but enough open so you won't starve.

Are you returning back to Boston? If so, I might drive to Acadia and then spend a couple of nights in Portland, ME after you recharge by staring at the ocean for a few days.

Hiking around Acadia is probably out of the question since trails would probably still be too muddy. I know a lot can happen in the next 4 weeks but the NH seacoast still has quite a bit of snow. I guess the question is what do you plan to do to relax because I don't think driving in two different directions for hundreds of miles is relaxing. The drive up and down I95 is boring. Lots of pine trees in the Maine section. I don't even like it in summer.

I just thumbed through an issue of Taste Seacoast NH and saw there is a new food tour of Portsmouth NH that looked fun and interesting. You could also do a cooking demo at Stonewall Kitchen Cooking school in Kittery ME. (next door to Portsmouth) It should be very pretty on side roads. You could visit some wineries and/or breweries. Explore Old Port Area of Portland ME. Walk sandy beaches. Check out conservation areas. It just doesn't seem like a good time of year to visit Acadia. There's a lot to see between Boston and Bar Harbor that would involve less miles.

Hi gail and dfrostnh

Thanks for the inputs. Have figured out that the campgrounds at Acadia would open after 15-May. So am getting less motivated to travel that far and missing out on the uniqueness that the place has to offer. So I might pick cape cod unless I did not do proper homework about Acadia.

What I want to do?
Spend some quality time with my wife and do some photography (ocean, sunrise/sunset and night trails)

Yes, I am returning to Boston. Do you recommend spending 4-5 days in cape cod instead? Or can I explore New England too?

Cheers and thanks again

At the end of April, I would play it by ear depending on the weather and my level of interest. Finding lodging should not be much of a problem. If the whales are back from the south, take a trip out of Provincetown with the Dolphin Fleet. You could start on the Cape and if you feel you've seen enough, or the weather is nicer to the north, south or west, head out. You can really relax on the Cape. I like the area from Eastham to Provincetown best for that kind of a trip. The National Seashore is great.

Boston itself has plenty to do for a few days too.

I would check back here about a week before you trip to see how the spring thaw is coming along in both places and what the forecasts are predicting for weather and for mosquitoes/black flies. Since your desire is down time and photography, you'll probably want to just stay on Cape Cod.

Surf n Sand Beach Motel in Yarmouth has good value ocean view rooms with patio. Old Harbor Inn in Chatham if you want something a little higher end with great breakfast.

Thank you, emalloy and clarkgriswold.

Guess, I will stick to Cape Cod. Also, appreciate your recommendation about lodging/hotels.

I agree that the lodging doesn't seem to be of problem right now as most of them are available. I have read that Chatham has a location advantage as I can manage both to drive easily to Martha's vineyard and Provincetown on two different days.
Surf n Sand Beach Motel really looks enticing.

I have also selected couple of not so expensive options in Chatham:
1. Chatham Guest Rooms
2. Chatham Highlander

The activities that am planning are:
1. A day in Provincetown (Beech forest)
2. A day in Martha's vineyard (ferry Bay spirit)
3. Market / shopping et al in Cape Cod

Any suggestions welcome about lodging, places to visit, ferry services, transportation etc.

Thanks again
Aniket

Yes, just Cape Cod is your best bet...Acadia is some distance in a different direction as you know. We've stayed in Chatham but it was a time share from a friend. Chatham is a good location as you say. Elegant dining at Coonamessett Inn but avoid Grille 327. Nice beaches in the area such as Menauhant Beach. As college students we worked on Martha's Vineyard and enjoy it. En route to Provincetown is the Kennedy Museum which we liked...jfkhyannismuseum.org. Enjoy lunch at Naked Oyster.

Thanks everyone and apologies for the late reply.
Had a great time at Cape Cod. Had stayed at three different places - a night at Martha's Vineyard, couple of nights at Provincetown and a night at Dennisport.

Would highly recommend spending time at Provincetown.

Cheers and thanks again for all the inputs.

Regards,
AD
