Canyonlands By Night

Has anyone taken a tour with them? They advertise on their website a tour that starts around 7-8 pm.
http://www.canyonlandsbynight.com/cbnd.html

If you did take the tour, how long is it? Would you recommend it? Did you do dinner + tour or tour only? Any opinion or other suggestion for similar tour is welcome.
Thanks

One more question, please: Is it true that you cannot take pictures on this tour? Thanks

I have not done this tour but I've been around when they flash their lights on the canyon walls.

It will be dark and the lights go every which way...it would be hard to take pictures. I read their website and that's probably why they say that this tour does not lend itself to pictures or video cameras.

You can SEE every where that the tour goes by driving Hwy 128 out of Moab, Utah so this is more of a light show. I have no idea if it's worth it or not.

When I went on the mule ride in the Grand Canyon, I mentioned to the guide that I was going to Moab. He rattled off how wonderful it is, then mentioned all the things I should see and do. He then said, "But whatever you do, don't do that night tour that they advertise" He said that he had done it and it was really lame. We noticed it one night as we drove to the Red Cliffs Lodge where we were staying. They drive around with big lights that is used on a hollywood set and it did seem pretty lame to us as well. We didn't do any tours as we just didn't have time but, I would think there are better tours than that one. Hope this helps.

xyz99,
We did the Canyonlands by Night boat tour last August (tour only, not dinner). It was a different perspective being in the water going through the canyon and the guides were fairly informative. The lights shine on different rock formations and they also point out "pictures" in the rocks (areas that if you use your imagination look like something else - my kids liked the "Winnie-the-Pooh" area). They also play music and I think a recorded Native American legend. It gets a bit hokey.

Bottom line - we were disappointed in it - it definitely didn't live up to its billing. We didn't do the dinner because it was outdoors and very hot (August) when we were there, but lots of people did. If you had a few nights in Moab and were looking for something to do, then give it a try. I truly feel that if something sounds interesting to you, then you should give it a try and form your own opinion. We only had 1 night and the kids would have rather been in the hotel pool.

I think it lasted about 1 and 1/2 hours and you cannot take pictures. BTW I would highly recommend Best Western Canyonlands if you don't have a hotel reserved yet.

Hope this helps. Moab was one place we really wished that we had more time.

Thanks all. This really helped.
We will have 3 nights in Moab (next Sept), but technically only 2 days to explore the 3 parks - don't want to miss Dead Horse SP.
From everything that I've been reading, there are a lot of other things more interesting (Delicate Arch at sunset is a must) so we'll skip this.
I doubt we'll have time to do all the things we would like to...but I guess this means we'll have to go back.

xyz99,

Delicate Arch at sunset is a must and also ANYWHERE else in Arches for sunset the next night will be fantastic too! DH and I enjoy just driving in to see the sunset. What's nice is it is so close to Moab.

Thanks Utahtea!
For this trip, certain things became 'a must' only because of your and other's like you recommendations. Not sure if we can do 2 sunsets in Archs, since the 2nd day will be Canyonlands + Dead Horse SP. But I'm sure we'll find wonderful spots there, too.

I assume these trails aren't lit at night, so is it hard to negotiate your way back after sunset? Do you bring flashlights....or breadcrumbs??

Be sure to do a "daytime" jeep tour out of Moab. They are good, especially if you are not 4x4-ing yourself.

We saw Canyonlands NP & Dead Horse Point SP in one day & then went into Moab for a High Point Hummer Tour of the Moab Slickrock Rim ("Hell's Revenge"): highly recommend!

bd,

If you are asking about Delicate Arch at sunset, then you don't need flashlights or bread crumbs. The sunsets on the arch happens before it does on most of the trail because of the arches location. You still have enough daylight to walk back the 1 1/2 miles which is mostly downhill from here. I wouldn't stay to long after sunset or you could end up needing a flashlight...been there done that and glad we had a full moon!

Thanks all.
Laurieb_nyny, did you do canyonlands (Island in the Sky, I assume) and Dead Horse and the Hummer tour all in one day? Or the parks in one day and the Hummer tour in another?

No, we will not have a 4WD, so the Hummer tour or the jeep tour that Syv recommends sound both very tempting - that is, if we can fit one of them in the same day when we visit the parks.

Hi xyz: Yes we did the 2 Parks + the Hummer tour at 4pm. We drove to most of the overlooks in Canyonlands & did one long hike on the rim. In DHP we went to the overlook & the Visitors Center. When we got back to Moab we went on the Hummer tour (2 hours) & had dinner at Pasta Jay's. You will love Moab & those Parks!

Another idea is to rent a jeep in Moab. We like to rent at Farbee's Jeep and get a Jeep Wrangler. They will give you maps and a cooler with water to take. We take off early in the morning for the Potash - Shafer trail with a quick side trip on the White Rim Trail to Mussellman Arch. Up the Shafer Trail to Canyonlands, Island In the Sky District. Hit all the overlooks in Canyonlands. Do the short Mesa Arch Hike then stop at Dead Horse State Park before going back to Moab either on the paved highway OR take Long Trail back. Both these 4 x 4 roads are very easy. Most dirt with a few places where high clearence is needed. This makes a great day!

Great ideas, thanks. And now, when I thought I had everything decided, I have annother dilemma: Hummer tour or Jeep rental?

We'll probably try the jeep rental, since that gives us more choices for the day and more flexibility.

Do we need to rent the jeep in advance, or we can do it the day before or even that day?
