Does anyone know if the Cane and Taro restaurant has opened yet in the former Rusty Harpoon location in Whaler's Village in Kaanapali Maui
They have been working on this restaurant for almost a year. What is taking so long to get it opened?

From another board:
As of June 28, the old Rusty Harpoon is still covered with plastic wrap.
I suspect they might be a bit squeezed for $$/loans.
That is NOT true. You should not say things like that if you are unsure.
They should be opening no later than early next month.
I have no idea why it was delayed, but an empty restaurant with plastic sheeting would be better than the Rusty Harpoon was.
Anyway, from TripAdvisor, yesterday:

'Cane & Taro is set to open on Dig Me Beach at Whalers Village in Kaanapali between Leilani's and Hula Grill.
"We'll open softly for lunch and dinner September 29," says D.K. Kodama of his highly anticipated restaurant that will also start serving breakfast later this year.
As for the look, "we removed, repaired and replaced most everything and it's really open and inviting. Kind of like plantation style," says Kodama.
The menu will be a "little bit Sansei, a little bit DK Steak House," the famous chef says of his other restaurants. "And a little bit Cheesecake Factory with a lot of fresh fish." I've tasted it all and I can recommend everything on the menu. Our margaritas will be made with fresh lime juice and mai tais like old Trader Vics."
Executive chef is Royden Sato, formerly with Starwood
Resorts."

Did you get the sand ?
Anyway, I'll be able to see for myself next month, and sf7307 has it right, plastic wrap is better than that place was (tho' it's only moved, not closed).
>>> (tho' it's only moved, not closed).>>>
Seriously?
Yes pspercy I did! Thanks so much. It is the only sand sample I have from the African continent.

Seriously?
Yes, forget the new location, out towards the Kaanapali Resort entrance off Hwy 30 I think.
iamq Great
As sf7307 says and as I hear too, September 29 is the opening for Cane and Taro. Sounds good to me!
pspercy...
Let us know how it is! I remember when it was Chicos...I think that's the name of it. What a wild place that was! It was fun but could get pretty crazy as the night progressed! We used to eat at the Harpoon but hadn't for the past 3 or 4 years so I'm pretty sure we won't be following it to wherever it ends up.
Chico's was in the middle of the mall. Rusty Harpoon was further down towards the beach

I just left Maui. They opened yesterday, Sept 26th. There was asbestos in the building which needed abatement and why it took so long to open. I attempted to go there too but ended up at Hula Grill. I found a coupon for Hula Grill at http://www.mauileisureguide.com.
The Rusty Harpoon moved into the building left by Reilly's Steak house at the entrance to Kaanapali Resort. Meanwhile Reilly's moved to Kahana Gateway and then subsequently closed. The Rusty Harpoon still has cheap drinks at happy hour.
My wife & I had a really great dinner at Reilly's in Kahana, the next year it was gone, turned out their last night was the night we arrived & we missed the specials and closing party
Had dinner at Cane & Taro recently.

It was excellent in all respects, a worthy addition to the choices in the area
