Californians can renew their registration at the AAA office but I think you are stuck with DMV offices if you need to retest or lose your license.

Yes, at certain AAA locations in Massachusetts. The procedure is the same as visiting the RMV--you can do the eye test, get your photo taken and then they give you a paper/temporary license and then the new "real" license comes in the mail in 5-10 days.

Not in CA unless the rules have changed that I had not heard about. AAA can do most DMV transactions but not driving tests/liceense

My Oregon CDL will expire on my birthday next year. At least a month before my birthday the Oregon DMV will send a renewal form which I will have to take to the local DMV which is closer to me than a AAA office. I pay for my vehicle renewal registrations online and they mail me the new registrations.
I did use my AAA card to get a discount on Amtrak travel. Now that I'm 62 I get 15% off. I got the Lifetime Senior Pass for $10 to get into all the NP's.

In CT, the photo is taken and a valid and genuine license is given at that time. Takes about half an hour. Love the convenience. The DMV lines in my area are hours long.

Did you check CA? I googled and got a 'Yes, you can renew your license at these southern California AAA offices', but was re-routed back to the CT AAA site when I clicked on that link. Yes in Florida. The appointment was easy to make, waiting was minimal. Such a better experience than waiting in line at the Drivers License Bureau.

Looks like it's not anywhere near universal, but it never occurred to me that this was an option anywhere. In those states where it's allowed, does that mean that the DMV sets up a satellite office in an AAA office? Since it's a government issued ID, I would think that government employees would have to handle all the paperwork, not AAA or any other business or organization's employees.

Actually, the answer for Florida is "sometimes".

The Pembroke Pines AAA office has a DHSMV service center "co-located" at it. This is the case in some other cities as well (e.g. Tampa), but in many (maybe most) cities it is not the case (including Jacksonville, Orlando, and Miami).

Not in NY. You can do it by mail or online - as long as you send in a signed certificate from your eye MD that your vision has been tested. Otherwise it's the DMV - a wait of 2 hours at "License Express" versus 3 or more at the general offices.

My Oregon/Idaho AAA Guidebook says that the local offices can provide an International Driving Permit which is a translation of your valid Drivers License into 11 different languages.

I googled what you asked and got the Automobile Club of Southern California site, which had a chart of DMV services they provide in CA, NV and UT, and drivers license renewal is only available in NV.

That's true, except I've exhausted my online renewals and have to go in this year -- I think I have to take the written test (I've had my drivers license for 43 years, and have never had a moving violation ticket, and only been in one accident, so I think I know the rules, but they also ask pretty detailed questions, so I'll study up. Fortunately I have an appointment, so I won't have to wait in line long).

DC you can do online and after a certain number of online renewals you must got to the DMV. also know that in MD you cannot renew thru the AAA.

Renewing a CA Drivers License through the mail or online is possible only if you don't need an address change or retest (usually due to medical conditions or being flagged for unsafe driving habits!) It still takes forever to get the new license back ( 60 days now).

Regardless of what the web sites say, I just spoke to a person at our local AAA via phone. She said you absolutely can NOT renew your drivers license through them. The reason is that it is a government issued ID and only the government can issue it, not a private corporation.

She said that AAA can do any and all services that you normally could do via mail for you. Such as transfer of car title, license plates,etc.

I asked if this was true for all AAA offices thruout the US and she said yes.

So if you wait until the last minute to renew an expired drivers license and call or go to the AAA offices you will not get a valid driver's license. You can only get one thru the DMV.

The person you spoke to at AAA was right—about California. Obviously she is misinformed about the rest of the country (or else there was a misunderstanding between the two of you).

In some other states (such as Connecticut, where the OP lives) you CAN renew a license through AAA. After all, RENEWAL is something "you normally could do through the mail" (or via the Internet) in many states. Certainly AAA cannot offer driver's tests and issue first-time licenses!

Licenses can be renewed and duplicate licenses and IDs can be issued through at least SOME AAA offices in those states.

So indeed AAA cannot issue you a license, but they CAN issue you a temporary renewal that is valid until you receive you new one in the mail. The state DMV and AAA must have some kind of agreement that allows this, or else AAA would not be doing it!

From the posts above, you will also see that in certain Florida cities the DHSMV actually has mini-offices AT AAA, so you certainly can do license renewals at those AAA locations. And in Nevada the DMV has kiosks at some (all?) AAA offices that allow you to renew licenses. So in some AAA offices in those two states, at least, you evidently can walk out with your actual new license.
