Camping in Utah and Colorado in June.

Jump to last reply

My husband and I will be travelling from Melbourne, Australia for the month of June this year and we have planned our itinerary to include camping for three days or so, at a stretch, before we head back to the comforts of motels etc. Thanks to assiduous reading on this wonderful site we have planned to land in LA, hire a full size car for a month and visit Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde and RMNP. We will spend a couple of nights near LAX to get over jet lag before we pick up the car and spend 2 nights on the way to Zion for our first camping for 2 nights at the Watchman campground. We have booked most nights in either campgrounds or motels. Some campgrounds don't accept bookings and we are happy to try our luck. As far as I can tell we shouldn't have too much trouble in the out of the way campgrounds.

My questions in no particular order are:

Will Spring be far enough advanced in the campgrounds around the Ouray area and around the Tincup area in Colorado? We don't mind being a bit cold at night but we are hoping that the aspens etc. will be in full leaf in June in places like Silver Jack Campground and Mirror Lake Campground.

We love to have a fire when camping. Is fire wood for sale in the national parks listed above and, if so, where is it typically available and at what cost? And how is it packaged? We will not be camping at all at Mesa Verde.

Is it foolish to think that leaving LAX on the Sunday morning of the Memorial Day Weekend will see the traffic on the freeways heading toward Las Vegas fairly light? We hope so because it will be difficult for us driving on the right hand side of the road.

We are planning to pre-purchase some inexpensive camping gear at Walmart and the last question is does anyone know whether Walmart's Site to Store is a reliable service? It sounds like the answer to our prayers in terms of easy purchase of a small tent etc.

We are getting very excited and look forward to the usual excellent help and advice that this forum seems always to offer. Thanks in advance.

Happy Trails,
Marchend.
