Hey Everyone
This coming August, I will be taking a road trip to the Grand Canyon from the Boston Area with a special friend.
We plan to be in Missouri on the second night, and plan on camping in the Springfield/Joplin area. Can someone please recommend a nice campground near there? We prefer the more rural campgrounds to the swimming pool/video arcade complexes.
We also like rivers.

South of Springfield is Eureka Springs Arkansas, a very interesting place. It was a health spa in the 1880's. and has been preserved due mostly to it's location/terraine. I highly reccommend a stop there. There is a KOA about 4 miles west of town in a wooded, hilly area. Down a road from the campground is a lake with boating and fishing. There is a swimming pool at the campground but the whole area is lowkey.
South and east of Eureka Springs is the town of Mountain View Ar. where the Ozark Folk Center is located. If you happened to be there on the weekend there is much acoustic music in the town square. I have never seen anything like it. The Ozark RV Park is adjacent to the folk center, has some trees and a community room where musicians "jam". Not an experience you will have many other places. Musicians come from all over to camp and play together. Have fun.
On the other hand, if you are east of St, Louis, check out the town of Hermann. It was settled by Germans and has an outdoor beer and wine garden usually with music. I think we camped in a city park there. Have a great trip. CJ
