Hi:
Anyone have a good recommendation for a campsite that's accessible by public transportation (rail, bus, whatever) from NYC and is relatively quiet/remote with good hiking. We're not looking for an "all around family" kind of place with mini golf and all that! Just some place quiet and surrounded by wilderness and good hiking/walking. We're not super-rugged campers, but don't need a lot of amenities nonetheless.
Thanks!
ps. I've checked the camping sites and I'm a little overwhelmed. Hence my post.

State and national parks are your best bet for wilderness settings.
I did a search on Yahoo for New York State Parks and there are 20 on Long Island alone. Many more just north of NYC.
Can't help you with transportation.
I'd suggest Harriman State Park. You can take a train or bus to get close to the park. There are several nice lakes as well as some good hiking trails up on the ridges above the lakes.
A bit further north is Taconic (sic) State Park, which also has some fine trails and campsites.
