Campground and Beach near Mystic, Ct

For his birthday adventure, my nine year old grandson has requested to go to Mystic Seaport, to go camping, and to go to the beach (in early August). We have a popup tent camper and prefer not to camp in a RV kind of park, but something with some trees and some privacy. We don't need hookups but could use electricity if it is there - it doesn't really matter one way or the other. Does anyone have a suggestion of where to camp relatively close to Mystic and also is there a Connecticut beach near there that you particularly recommend?

Thanks for your help.

CT state parks are you're best bet.

HAMMONASSET BEACH has both camping and beach

I'd suggest looking at nearby Rhode Island campgrounds, such as the linked Burlingame and perhaps the Charlestown Breachway areas. http://www.riparks.com/Locations/Loc...urlingame.html

RI has ocean surf beaches which imo are far superior to any beaches in CT. You would be about 30 minutes drive from Mystic.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions. I'm going to try Burlingame this time.

Just thought I'd give the report of our trip. Burlingame State Park was great - huge wooded campsite, nice beach. But we were hit by a microburst at 6 AM the first morning; two trees fell on our camper causing significant (probably unfixable damage). We were thankfully unhurt but it was a major event resulting in 10 people transported by ambulance and a heavy toll of damage to campers, tents, cars, and loss of many huge trees. It will be quite a cleanup task.

As a result we didn't get to Mystic Seaport but are planning a short trip down there later this summer.

The campground itself though was beautiful and under better conditions we would have enjoyed it.

Sorry to hear you were there for this. We have a beach house in the area. One of our neighbors had two cars crushed. I was back in the city but a friend wrote to say winds reached 80 mph!

Glad you're ok and that you enjoyed the campground.
