I am going to be staying in Calistoga for 3 days in August. I've never been to the wine country. Having read the tourbooks and posts here, I am a bit overwhelmed as to which are the truly "must visit" wineries. I am looking for friendly hosts where they will take the time to explain the vintages, process, etc. Also, is the "wine train" worth the money? Anything close to Calistoga would be especially appreciated. Thank you.

No, the wine train is not worth it. It runs from Napa to St. Helena and back. Part of the trip you are eating, part of the trip looking at ugly route 29. You don't get to go anywhere--worse than a bus tour. Wineries we like in the north part of Napa Valley (where Calistoga is) are Clos Pegase (good wine and beautiful art), ST. Clement, Chateau Montelena and Folie au Deux. Stirling with its tram up the hill to the winery I feel is a waste of time and Disneyish. Also fun in Calistoga are the mud baths and Old Faithful. Fave restaurant is Catahoula--Cajun Southern food. Also good is Wappo Bar Bistro for tapas on the patio and the CIA Greystone is worth a lunch at least--just down the road toward St. Helena but north of the town. It's in the old Christian Brothers Winery Building and has a lovely patio. Look at www.napavalley.com/calistoga
