California trip: Where to go after San Francisco?

Planning a family vacation (mom, dad, 2 teens) to California in the spring. We will spend some time in San Francisco, then drive south, stopping at Hearst Castle. Then I'm stumped. We would like to hunker down in a vrbo/airbnb somewhere since we like space versus cramped hotel rooms and since they often have a minimum stay we don't want to do one night here, one night there. What area should we stay in and what should we do? Thinking maybe near Los Angeles and visiting Universal Studios, maybe a Beverly Hills tour & lunch? TV show taping? Any recommendations for this southern California leg of our trip? Unfortunately I don't think it will be warm enough for the beach in March. Thanks!!

Minimum age for most TV show tapings is 18, a few is 16. It is very boring and time consuming.
Maybe a tour of Warner Bros instead, you get to visit sets not in use for filming at the time and is a small group tour unlike Universal.
Our water is never warm enough to swim without a wetsuit.

We need more details as far as where are you flying in/out of? How much time for the whole trip and what is your budget?

Would you be interested in watching a game show taping? The ones I'm familiar with divide their taping day into two sessions, so you would only be there for half a day at the most.
