Not really a California trip report, not sure I shall do one of those, 5 weeks of trip report would be long and boring! The photo book I made, and which is currently being printed is, for a limited time, available online for you to see.

Another small correction - I think.

I don't believe there is a Pfeiffer State Beach. There is a Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, A Pfeiffer State Park, and a Pfeiffer Beach - which you photographed. I believe Pfeiffer Beach is Federal land - not State land. We've stayed at Pfeiffer State Park dozens of times, and they put a "stickie" on our windshield to allow us free entry to the other State parks in the area - but not Pfeiffer Beach. The guy at the Pfeiffer Beach parking lot said it was Federal - so I think I used my Senior National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass.

Of course, as Michael told you San Francisco & San Mateo gets water from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir.

Stu, you are of course right, but I can live with that mistake .
The reason I had it in my head it was a state beach was because, unlike every other federal site we visited, they didn't accept the interagency pass, and we had to pay.
I just remembered paying so assumed state, not federal. Looking in my little black book I noted it was federal , and mean of them not to accept the pass, but I didn't consult that page when making up the album. Ah well.

It was a lovely spot anyway, and we enjoyed it.

Scenes from the movie "From Here to Eternity" were filmed there. Back in the 70s, it was a "go to" spot for "au-natural" sunbathers. Unfortunately, it is cold & foggy about 80% of the time in the summer.

I only mentioned that it's not Pfeiffer State Beach because as you know, it is difficult to find off Hwy 1. If any vacationers asked where Pfeiffer State Beach was located - no telling where they would be directed to.

I heard Zabrinski Point was temporarily closed at some time recently. Any info on that???

What a great trip and such a beautiful book you have compiled. Very nice photos, and very well displayed. Love it. I also congratulate you for working out such an interesting route, well off the beaten track for most travelers in California/Oregon. Nice!

In case you're interested, the plant with the purple flowers on one of the last couple pages of the book is the Princess flower, Tibouchina urvilleana. It blooms year-round in San Francisco and provides such a nice pop of purple.

Stu, Zabrinski point is closed at the moment. The road is being completely redone as it was in a bad way. Initially planned for October it was shifted to December, which was good for us. I can't remember of hand how long it is closed, but the DV website has all the info under park warnings.

Great job on the photo book! Thanks for sharing. I liked how you did the occasional panorama spreads like Hetch Hetchy. Also how you tied in the photo locations with numbers on the map. And the variety: scenery, signs, old buildings, bugs, flowers.

For me personally it was fun to see photos of the Balclutha on pages 95-6. I worked onboard as a ship's rigger in 1974-5. We repaired and refurbished all of the rigging in a big 2-year project. Glad it hasn't fallen down!

How did you get the star shots, special equipment or just a solid tripod and a fast lens?

Anyway, nice work. It was enjoyable going through the book.

Nelson I am glad you enjoyed the Balclutha - we loved seeing it.

The star shots were with a sturdy tripod and a 14mm F2.8 Samyang lens, ISO 800. I also used a Pentax Astrotracer for the Milky Way photos, though I did take others without the astrotracer which I didn't use in the album, but have tried using stacking software on them. It was the first time I have tried stars, as we can't see them here due to light pollution. I will definitely being trying again another time when I have dark skies, and will work on improving my technique.

I assume that you are aware that the sign at lowest point in the U.S. makes no sense. 282 ft. do not equal 855 meters, and inverting the numbers still gives an inaccurate equivalence.

It's hard to see, but if you zoom in the sign says 85.5 meters, which does make sense.

Good eye catching that, though. My first thought was that maybe it had slipped past the proofreader.
