California in 4 days? Where to go
we are planning to fly into California for 4 days in April and try to see as much as possible. Should we start in San Diego and head north, or start in San Fransisco and go south? Is the pacific hwy the best and most scenic route? what about wine country in April? Help, we really want to maximize the trip.

Hard to see everything, but do like your idea of going down the coast. Would start in San Francisco and head south thru Monterey. We spent two days on this trip, but likely three would have been better as you don't want to rush.

I'd pick SF to LA (or visa versa) and stick to the coast. With only 4 days, I wouldn't go all the way down to SD. Spend 1 day in SF, 2 days enroute to LA, and then the final day in LA. Or if LA doesn't appeal to you, maybe spend 3 days going down the coast, last night in Santa Barbara or there abouts and head to LA for your flight out.

I think 4 days might be pushing it a little for such a big itenerary. If it were me, I would focus on just one or two cities.Being from Ca, I would have to recommend that you visit Monterey for at least one day of your trip. It is absolutly beautiful, has a great aquarium which is fun for both adults and kids. It is a lovely community with great walking trails, a nice beach and lots of sea life. Chris' whale watching trips can make for a fun afternoon as well. As for your scenic route, I would recomend highway 1. The scenery is breathtaking. San Diego can also be a lot of fun. There is a great zoo there. San Diego is also home to Sea World if you are traveling with kids. However, San Diego and Monterey are quite a distance apart, so keep that in mind.
