am considering a vacation from March 30 to April 9, 2005, driving from LA to SF. It would be a special anniversary celebration.

What kind of weather can I expect at that time? Any suggestions as to readers' favorites? I am not that much into cities and would spend little time in LA or SF, having visited both cities alot in the 1980s but not since.

Well with weather patterns being so crazy who knows, but believe you could get a lot of rain.

I was in San Diego late March last year and it was quite chilly. At night, it got cold.

I don't mind chilly weather - I live in the northeast. But I would like to avoid rain. What is the possibility?

Woodstockguy, as I told you in my other post, probably there will be rain. That does not mean 100% but I would sure go on the assumption there will be rain. A horrible storm, who knows? Weather patterns have been unpredictable as of late.

If you want to absolutely avoid rain than perhaps this might not be the trip you want to take at that time of the year.

Interestingly, considering your fodor's name, my first choice for our trip is Italy - Rome & points south. But I am a bit wary at the cost given the weakness of the dollar. I found in the past I needed to upgrade my accommodations in Italy more than most other places to be satisfied, and I am leary it will be too expensive at present.

woodstockguy, I sure understand about wanting to go to Italy. I was suppose to this year but did not due to a lot of business matters I had to take care of this spring/summer, investments going south so to speak, dollar vs euro and on and on. Am going to go next year no matter what though.

If you did want to go to Italy, and could, hotels would not be as much as a bit later on. Don't know what type of accomodations you require. Sure would be a beautiful location of a special anniversary celebration.

Anniversaries during rain months etc. do put a bit of a crimp on plans. I was wondering, does Mexico suit the two of you. The west coast of Mexico. February is beautiful, end of March should still be great.

Just a thought.

LoveItaly: Thanks for the suggestion. We were in Puerto Vallarta about 8 years ago and loved it. Haven't seen much else in Mexico except Cozumel a couple of times, which became very developed (disappointingly) in just a few years to accommodate cruise ships.

I suspect Acapulco would be too developed and, perhaps, urban for our liking (though we have no complaints about Rome). Any other suggestions in Western Mexico?

OK, thank goodness for maps!! I really enjoyed Mazatlan. It is further north than PV (which I have always enjoyed for a relaxing get away in winter). It is due east (on the coast of Mexico) across the sea from San Jose de Capo.

Unfortunatly Mexico is not an inexpensive as it use to be although the peso vs our dollar is a very good rate for US travelers.

You might want to go on to Google, type in Mazatlan and check out hotels etc., and get a feel for it. Capo is loved by many but think more expensive.

By the way, we always booked a vacation package via Alaska Airlines for flight & hotel. Money saver. Might want to check on their website plus other airlines.

Have fun checking everything out. Will look forward as to your decision.
