California 2014
Planning to head west in May 2014. We want to visit San Francisco, Monterey, wine country and Yosemite. We are thinking 10 days to do all this, is this being unrealistic?

I don't think you'll have any problem with your itinerary if you actually have 10 days here not including the days you're flying in and out. Even if you only have 8 or 9, its doable. You could spend 4 full days in San Francisco and make one of those a day trip to Napa or Sonoma, or spend 3 days in San Francisco and 2 days in Napa or Sonoma, drive to and spend 2 days in Monterey area (if you have time, add a third day, and spend it driving down the coast), head over to Yosemite for 2 nights, and back to SFO.

How much hiking do you plan on doing at Yosemite? Do you plan on seeing Maripossa Grove? What do you plan on doing in San Francisco? 2 days is enough for me in most cities, but there is a ton to do and see there. What all do you plan on doing in Monterey? Do you plan on doing Pebble Beach Drive or even going further down to say Big Sur or even as far as Hearst Castle? Do you plan on seeing Point Lobos, Monterey Aquarium. We really enjoyed kayaking at Elkhorn Slough. How much of wind country do you plan on seeing/doing? All of these questions and more would need to be known to get an idea of how long to stay in each place.

We plan on some hiking in Yosemite. Yes, Maripose Grove is a must, center valley as well. For San Francisco, we want to take in as many sites as possible. Monterey will include the aquarium, Big Sur. How far is the Hearst Castle from Big Sur? About 80 miles from the maps I am looking at. That might be on the itinerary too. I am thinking one day in wine country.

Thanks for the info. Another question, are there any recommendations for wine country? We visited Santa Barbra a few years age and went on a trip to St Ynez Valley to visit the vineyards. We went on a tour with Cloud Climbers Jeep and Wine Tour, we had a great day! Know of any thing like that in Napa/Sonoma?
