Cafe de Artistes NYC
I have a question about Cafe de Artistes. My brother lives directly across the street from that restaurant, but we never go there when I visit him. Last time I was there, I said I'd heard good things about it, and he was surprised. He said that every time he is in there, it feels like it is full of old people (and he is 64), rather stuffy, and the food isn't all that great. The food is subjective, I guess, but have others found it rather too staid in atmosphere?

This has long been one of our favorite spots - we are in our early 50's and have been going since our late 30's - we find it very romantic for a quiet dinner - and while yes, we see 'older folks' we also see younger - we have also enjoyed lovely Sunday brunch and perhaps we have always been lucky but have always found the food to be perfect, the decor lovely and it a charming place all around, - a calming place as we say - conducive to conversations without having to speak above any clamor or noise in a setting we enjoy followed by a walk through the park to work off the meal !
Restaurants, any and all can be so subjective to personal tastes - if your brother lives so close, give it a try sometime !

In that area, I'd opt for Picholine over Cafe Des Artistes anyday of the week. The latter isn't bad. But, I don't disagree that it isn't exactly a hopping spot these days.
BTW, if you do try CDA, I might suggest their Prix Fixe lunch.

The last time we were at Cafe des Artistes, there was Madeleine Albright at one table and Itzhak Perlman and entourage at another. I guess they may both be considered "old people".
I too would prefer the food at Picholine, but if I'm not mistaken dinner at Picholine also usually ends up costing us considerably more than what we spend at Cafe des Artistes.
I wouldn't call the atmosphere "staid", but romantic, ornate, elegant or glamorous are all adjectives that come to mind.

The food at Cafe des Artistes is fine - but very traditional - as is the decor and atmosphere. I think it is best described as quiet and sedate. Perhaps romantic - I don;t know - have only been there when clients wanted to go.
It's certainly not the best food in the area - and not lively.
