Cabins less than one hour Rabun County Georgia in NC
We are looking at spending some time in the NC mountains in June with our boys (10 and 13) before having to be in Rabun County, GA. We would like to be within a one hour drive away. I was looking at Highlands, but wanted feedback on the area as well as any other suitable areas I should look.
We have about 3 days to spend. Wanted to hike, bike, zip, raft, etc.
Thanks!!!

Highlands is an upscale mountain resort community. Families enjoy Highlands but it is best known for catering to adults. It is surrounded by plenty of mountain trails so your guys can stay busy though. I haven't checked the distance to Rabun GA but you may want to look up Brevard.

Brevard is too far.
You need to sit down with a map of North Georgia and Western North Carolina and open VRBO on your computer. What is available for your week in that area?
One of the state park cabins in that area or Oconee State Park in South Carolina would be great, but I would be surprised if you could get one now.
I agree that while Highlands is great for adults, it would not be that interesting for boys that age.

Highlands is quiet. Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember zip lines, putt putt golf, a movie theatre.
It is best known for its inn and spa (and of course the mountains.)
Saphire Valley in Cashiers has more family activities and is close.
I don't think your boys will be bored in Highlands but I think you and your spouse would enjoy it more without them as part of another trip.

Cherokee was pretty horrible, tho not as bad as Gatlinburg. It is likely to have some of the Myrtle Beach type activities you are looking for, and Gatlinburg will have them all.
Sorry, I am originally from this area and never heard of Blue Ridge, Ga.
In your VRBO search, did you find anything on Lake Burton in Georgia?
Have you looked at Cullowhee, NC? Lots of rafting, whitewater kayaks, etc.

I'm not sure why you are looking for something other than the Rabun County area. A lot of people choose it for their vacation destination. Lots of hiking, whitewater rafting, ziplining, etc. to do in the area. Check vrbo.com for rentals. A house ON Lake Burton or Lake Rabun would be fabulous. Look for rentals in Lakemont, Tiger, Clayton, Rabun Gap and Dillard.
Ack, Blue Ridge and Ellijay are on the western side of the state and a lot of people have moved up that way due to easy access via 75/575. It's really built up a lot in the last 30 years.

If you are loooking for "entertainment" for your boys, YOu probably have to choode between hiking and waterfalls or the hoopla of Cherokee. Cashiers is problably the heart of waterfall country. Franklin-Cullowhee have a lot of rivers for fishing. Highlands is super cool but pricey and built for adults - no movie, no miniature golf, etc. I'd go Cazshiers or Cullowhee. One other thought is Blue Ridge Georgia which is on a large lake.

Blue Ridge is nice. A couple of Fodorites have second homes in the area. I like the other corner of the state better but both are nice.
If you look at a map, Hwy 76 goes from Clayton GA to Blue Ridge GA, paralleling the GA/TN border. There are several towns along that route as well as several mountain lakes. To be honest, you can't go wrong with any place along that route.

Based on our experience from last year ..... it rained all the time.... there was a flash flood warning for 2 of the 3 days...so a house that is the destination is very important. Blue Ridge cabins look really nice!!!! Lots of cool amenities...pool tables, hot tubs, cute porches, awesome kitchens.....

In between Bryson City and the NOC in NC. It was pretty remote based on our standards. It was a fantastic cabin!!! We really enjoyed the quiet and view. We were all happy to spend a day at GSMNP.
We really wanted to go tubing, but the rain didn't let that happen. To my surprise we cooked a lot of fun dinners and baked too. We also had an encounter with a wasp the size of a small bird on our porch, yikes!!!!
We aren't going back bc it was really to far.
