Cabs are on the expensive side.
We stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton and our friends were at the Alladin.
I believe it was around $20 with tip from the airport to the Hilton, and every time we went to the Alladin it was between $12-15.
There are shuttles that are cheaper from the airport to the hotels, but unless you are staying at one of the closest hotels, you will get to see them all before you get to yours.
Once you are at the hotel, there is a trolley service that stops at all the hotels and also goes downtown, and it's around $2 per person per trip.
In January of 2004 the new train should be completed, and it will run up and down through all the major Strip properties from Mandalay Bay all the way to the Las Vegas Hilton and the convention center. Last I heard, it will be free, as the hotels are picking up the tab. I can't confirm that, but regardless, it will be great, even if there is a little charge.

It's Vegas - you really want to worry about a designated driver? Go with the cabs. Personally, I don't find the cabs to be that expensive, maybe because I live in NYC and I'm used to taking them often. In terms of the fare from the airport, between $11 and $13 is what I've paid to Bellagio.

Just returned last week from Vegas and stayed at the Falmingo. From the hotel to the airport, it was $12. To downtown, it was $15. I agree it is pricey but worth it. The flamingo does have a shuttle service at the airport but didn't check into it since we were dropping off a rental car when we arrived. Got a courtesy ride to the hotel from Budget. The trolly is $1.65 but other posts didn't recommend it and from finding out for ourselves we can't either. The bus is $2. Used it once and it was ok.
