Budget hotel San Francisco

A young co-worker of mine is looking for budget, but reasonable accommodation in San Francisco for three days in August 2016. So far everything I have suggested has been too expensive. Just wondering if you have any suggestions. Dates are 13-16th August 2016.

Any particular location? What's the most they'll pay? Must it be a hotel or will alternative accommodation be considered?

How much per night? Budget doesn't mean much.

If hotels are too expensive has your friend looked at hostels?

The Fort Mason Hostel ("Fishermans Wharf") above was one possibility I was going to suggest and one I can recommend, if hostels will be considered.

I am not too sure on budget, but the Columbus Motor Inn that I suggested is too expensive.

Red Coach Motor Lodge is the cheapest if they have a car to park. Otherwise Luz Hotel on Dreary street has $80 rooms (shared baths) and pretty decent reviews.

I've stayed here a few times, it's just off Union Square. Rooms are around $129-139/night.

Oops never mind, I see that's just about the same price as the Columbus Motor Inn.

The San Remo is a very nice inexpensive hotel between Fisherman's wharf and North Beach. It's a European style hotel, so rooms are smallish, but pleasant.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Although Columbus is reasonable, it's when you convert it to $ NZ that the price starts to hit. This time last year the rate was around 85c now it is down to 65c. They are actually going to the UK for a three weeks and as they had to go via US, decided to stop off for three days.

I was thinking maybe it is a bit early to book. I went to Deb's hostel link and it says there is nothing available!

If price is the only concern, go to hotels.com, enter the desired dates and click "price low to high." I entered August 15-18, 2016, and found some conveniently located options in the $65-$99 range. Luz Hotel at 725 Geary (at $85) appears to be about as good as hotels in this price range get. The location is great.

"Andrews and Columbus in are about $139 a night"

They are both running over $200 on the dates in question. I think there is a tech convention that week. They should book something like the Luz or the Red Coach while the rates are low....they can always cancel if they find something that they like better.

If the budget is under $100 Grant Plaza and the Park Hotel on Sutter would be my first two choices. Don't look for mints on your pillows.

The Mosser is much less $ if they are willing to use the shared bathroom. I stayed there and there was never a wait for the bathroom. It was very clean. Good location, too.
