I will be staying in Park Slope for three days next week. The first night we'd like to stay in Brooklyn for dinner. Would it be more fun to find a restaurant on 5th Avenue (which is quite close to our hotel), or is it worth it to get to the Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO area for dinner, which I guess would either involve a lot of walking or a subway trip? Any specific recommendations for a restaurant? Casual and not incredibly expensive--I like a wide range of things, so not picky about type of food.

We liked this restaurant:

Dressler is not expensive for what it is, but it's not in Park Slope or DUMBO. http://www.yelp.com/biz/dressler-brooklyn
We had a good meal in Convivium Osteria.
Haven't eaten in Al Di La, but it has a very good reputation and has been around a long time. If you could get in, that would be my first choice.
Dressler is in Williamsburg. I would stay in Park Slope.
There's a great bakery, Trois Pommes, at 260 5th Avenue.
Agree about Al di La. Good, and reasonably priced, especially at lunch. Get there when they open unless you do not mind waiting.

Not particularly a restaurant, although the appetizer plate I had was good, but I liked The Union Bar in Park Slope. Nice lounge with old books, and often has live music downstairs.
