Broadway/Theatre recommendations for Fall 2005
Our auction committee wants to offer Broadway tickets at our May auction. I know it is hard to predict, but what do you think will be the hottest, hardest to come by tickets at that time? We will buy the tickets for an October performance, probably, so it would be great if the show was still hot in the fall. We have Spamalot tickets through another source. The show should have universal appeal to make the most money at auction. Dirty Rotten Scoundrel and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are two that might fit. Any others you might be able to think of? I know this is an unusual question, but I do appreciate any response.

In terms of name recognition, perhaps people would bid for "Steel Magnolias" with Delta Burke. "Spamalot" will probably be the scarcest ticket in town, so you've got that covered. Otherwise, you could probably gamble fairly safely with "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." I wouldn't go for "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."

"Odd Couple" begins October 4th; that will certainly be popular, even though M. Broderick didn't fare so well in "The Foreigner." Howard is likely right about "Steel Magnolias"; they are selling tickets through Labor Day, but who knows how it will do ... It also depends on how theater-savvy your bidders are; "Steel Magnolias" and the like are probably going to do best with tourists who look for familiar titles with TV stars (not a put-down, just an observation -- although this tendency led to my in-laws wanting to see "Bobbi Boland" w/Farrah Fawcett... that was interesting.)

Thanks for the thoughtful replies. The auction takes place in Connecticut, so audience is theatre savy, but I still think we should aim for universal appeal. Since we are close to NYC many have seen Wicked.
I like the idea of the Odd Couple. Chitty Chitty was very hot in Londdon but might not have universal appeal.
Thanks for taking the time to help with this.

I'd check with Roundabout and see what they will be doing then. Because their productions are usually limited run, hard to get tickets for once they open, and of a very high standard, I think that would make a good choice -- depending on the show of course.
