Oops forgot to ask. Do the lead actors appear in the matinees or do they tend to let the understudy do the performance?

can't answer for every show, of course, but saw Gypsy last week at the Saturday matinee and had Patti LuPone, and the rest of the lead cast. Wonderful !!
Stars appear at matinees unless they are on vacation, ill, or otherwise disposed.
An exception is sometimes made for extremely demanding roles. For instance, the actor who plays Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf," may appear only in evening performances.
Thanks for your replies. I think I'll try for evening performances anyway as my list of things I want to do is growing rapidly.
