Broadway show tickets
Would you advise getting show tickets from the TKTS booth in time square or buying the tickets in advance ? We are going to be in the city over Memorial Day weekend and would love to catch a show . I would love to see 'Book of Mormon' or some other Musial .... 'Hamilton' is probably impossible .

The Book of Mormon is also a tough ticket. And, certainly you'll get no discount offers for that show. I'd IMMEDIATELY go to Ticketmaster.com and check if any tickets are available for that weekend.
Other than that, if you have no other preferences, I'd check the discount offers on broadwaybox.com and playbill.com. You'll find several musicals available at discount rates.

Hamilton is possible only from the scalpers at $1K per ticket.
Book of Mormon never discounts and is almost always sold out - so go NOW to their official ticket seller to see if there is possibly anything left for your dates. If there are 2 of you sometimes you can find 2 single seats left form people who have bought an odd number.
Otherwise have a look at playbill.com to see what shows you might be interested in.

I am not usually willing to chance there not being a good selection at TKTS, so I agree with the above advice. I also don't want to waste time standing in line when I could be doing something much more fun.
Decide what you might like to see first, then scout around online for the best price. I have used Broadway Box before with good success.

Check both Broadway Box and Playbill.com for discount codes--not available for all shows, but for quite a few (I see this was previously mentioned). I agree with NewbE...I have never wanted to waste valuable New York vacation time standing in line (for Broadway tickets anyway).

I wish those who are putting out info on Hamilton would get their facts straight - with advance planning it's possible to get Hamilton Tix for less than $400 a ticket for good seats form stub hub or from ticketmaster's equivalent of stubhub. Not that people SHOULD pay those prices but as really good seats run about 2-300 at regular price , $500 is not that much of a stretch
We did through stubhub and had choices of several great seats at $350/pop.

Hamilton has recently raised it's prices for many seats. If one is buying from a secondary seller tickets that were once sold for much less, I'm sure there may be some available at lower prices. But as the official rates rise so will the resale prices.

Hamilton is an impossible ticket, so unless you want to stand for the lottery, just move on. Book of Mormon is not impossible, and it's widely discounted, just not at TKTS or Broadway.com. I often get offers for 20% off tickets for Book of Mormon, but I suspect none of those will be available for Memorial Day weekend.
It's a busy tourist weekend, and a lot of Broadway shows give blocks of tickets to sailors on leave, so I'd buy tickets now if you can. All the regularly discounted plays and musicals are available now, and that's what I'd recommend. There are a lot of new shows that have just opened in advance of the Tony nominations, and they are mostly available at full price. Some might still have tickets for that weekend (Shuffle Along, She Loves Me, American Psycho, etc.).
You can stand in the TKTS line, but it's going to eat up a lot of your time, and if you're in town for a limited amount of time, I don't think it's worth it.

Doug, you say discount tickets for The Book of Mormon are "widely discounted." Where???? It is still selling out and grossing over the 100% figure in receipts and attendance.
As for more readily available discount tickets, there are a lot of good musicals available for a discount including (listed alphabetically) An American in Paris, Chicago, Fiddler on the Roof, Matilda, School of Rock, The King and I, Tuck Everlasting and a lot more!

FYI, I bought full price tickets for Shuffle Along about two weeks ago, when it had barely begun previews and there were no reviews yet, and there weren't many tickets left for the Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

We are also going to NYC for Memorial Day weekend - meeting two friends who are flying up from Mexico who have never been to NYC before. I don't know if we will go to a show - waiting to hear back from them on whether they want to see one. But I did take a look at Ticketmaster and found numerous tickets available for Kinky Boots and Wicked, among others.

Book of Mormon appears on several of the corporate discount sites. I get offers all the time from Plum Benefits (the one that PRH belongs to). Right now the offer is $99 orchestra seats. But it's absolutely true that this show almost always sells out still. You have to buy tickets a few weeks in advance. It's really late for Memorial Day weekend (for popular shows at least).

Thank you all for pointing me in the right direction . I was able to get tickets for the Sunday afternoon performance for around $150 each - from broadwaybox.com
From the reviews of the theater , it seems that since it is a small theater , the seats should not be too bad !!
