Brits with 3 days - Many thnaks - and more questions please .......!!

Thank you Fodorites for all the information regarding our forthcoming trip to DC. You have all been REALLY helpful. After much discussion and referalls to guide books and this forum I have come up with a proposed itineray - but I have a few more questions please ...

Day 1 - start off in Arlington Cemetary ( being dropped of by our hosts )and take the trolley tour , stopping off at the house and other places of interest. Then across the Arlington Memorial bridge to the Lincoln Memorial and then up the west end of the Mall taking in the Korean/DC/WW2/Vietnam memorials, the White House and finally the Holocaust Museum. I intend to book tickets for the Holocaust Museum for 1500.

Questions - how long will it take us to walk across the bridge - would it be better for us to take the trolley and get them to drop us of at the Lincoln Memorial. Will we have enough time to fit all that into one day ? I know we will be doing "flying visits" to everything !

Day 2 - dropped of at The US Capitol building - then visit the Museum of the American Indian ( intend to get tickets for 1100) then onto the Museum of American History for the rest of the afternoon.

We have decided to visit these two museums -out of all of the ones available - as we are very interested in the history of the USA.

Day 3 SHOPPING!!! ( Our hosts are arranging this so not sure which mall.
My question here is - would it be better to shop either on Thurs or Fri - therefore avoiding the Saturday shoppers - or shop on Sat - therefore avoiding the weekend crowds at the museums ????

Am So excited about coming can't wait !!

Many thanks - again

Unles you feel like walking (and depending on how fast you walk) I would suggest being dropped off at the Lincoln Memorial. The cemetery is not right next to the Memorial Bridge but rather a couple hundred yards beyond it to the main entrance.

Mall hours will be limited on Sunday vs. the other days of the week. The closest mall to where you will be is probably Fashion Center at Pentagon City which is easily reachable by Metro.

Mall hours around here on Sunday are usually from about noon (PERHAPS) open a bit earlier, until about 5 PM or so. Weekdays it would be from 0900-1000 until 2130.

DAY 1:
Startas early as possible, this is a rather full itinerary. There are no restaurants between the cemetary and the Holocaust Memeorial Mueseum. Your best bet would either be the Holocaust Memeorial Mueseum cafe (get the matzo ball soup) or packing a picnic to eat at the bicentenial lake.

The walk from Arlington cemetary is about 15 minutes - very scenic walk as the monuments are in view as you cross the river. If the weather is nice that day and you aren't already tired, then I suggest walking to the Lincoln memorial.

DAY 2:
Plan to lunch at oe of the Nat'l Gallery of Art's four cafes/restauants (even though you won't be visiting the gallerys). By far the best dining option on the Mall area.

DAY 3:
Pentagon City mall is a great suggestion: the Pentagon City subway stop opens up right inside the mall - take the blue or yellow line.

Walking from Arlington to Lincoln Memorial ... altho I've done it a few times, I can't remember just how long it took ... seems like maybe 20-25 minutes. You do have to cross a few traffic lanes, and while there are crosswalks, not everyone will stop. I think that 3pm is a bit late for the Holocaust Museum, but then, I found it very interesting and read each display thoroughly ... got in at 10:15 and had to leave because they were closing.

Just was thinking that if u are concerned about the walk from Arlington to Lincoln, then modify itinerary to take Metro from Arlington to a stop near White House, walk past that, down to VietNam, up to Lincoln, Korean, WWII, then Holocaust Museums. Day 1 can be done in one day. Enjoy.

Sounds like you have done a lot of research - I am sure you will have a good visit. There have been several posts here about non-US citizens getting to tour White House - I don't think you can get in, but search out the posts here.

One thing to add, since it sounds like your hosts will drive you, is to ask them to take you on a drive by the various Monuments at night when they are lit up - there are tours that do this, but can easily be done by car.
