Where is the hostel?
The area around the Back Bay station is usually fine although it's always smart to be alert. The station is across the street from a high-end mall and in between two expensive neighborhoods but I believe the station itself attracts a small amount of crime (mainly theft I believe). You should be ok walking especially if you are not alone.

12 Hemenway is the Hostel International. It'll be safe to walk there. It's close to a mile though, so it'll take 20 minutes or more depending on how much luggage you have. The best/safest route to get there is:
Exit Back Bay Station via Dartmouth Street exit, turn Right when you exit onto Dartmouth Street. Turn LEFT on Boylston Street, stay on Boylston until you cross Mass Ave. Hemenway the first street on the left off Boylston after you pass Mass Ave.
40 Berkeley is closer - under 1/2 a mile. And yes, it's safe to walk there as well.
