Boston to another city??
Hi!
I am planning to travel to Boston for the first time with my husband. We were planning to stay in Boston for 3 days and then wanted to rent a car or even go in train and drive to another city/state for another 2 days. Ive heard that Portland is a good choice. What do you recommend? I wanted our trip to be from WED - SUN. But can make any changes if there are other recommendations.
Thank you!

Would you then fly home from Portland?
Portland is nice, and tourist-friendly with hotels walking distance from the Old Port and the waterfront, but it definitely is a city, not "coastal Maine village". So if city to city is what you'd like....Portland is a good choice.
If you are looking for more of a coast/beach vacation couple of days, the train also stops in Wells Maine and from there you could get a trolley to Ogunquit. But then you'd have to find your way to Portland for your flight home, or back to Boston.
A car is probably a better bet than the train since it gives you more freedom to get out and enjoy so much more...the beaches, the rocky coast, the lakes area, hiking etc. But, you only have 2 days and some of that is travel time back and forth, so if you just want to settle into a hotel and relax, then go with Portland. It has great dining, a couple of nice museums, Parks, lighthouses, bike rentals, boat tours to nearby islands and LOBSTER.

If you go to Portland, resist the logical impulse to "drive up the coast". You can see almost nothing from the coastal roads MA-ME, since the coast is actually tiny streets with houses. (Nothing like, for example, coast in northern CA). Take I 95 and spend the time in Portland. No need to fly out of Portland - it is only a few hours from Logan and you will likely spend more time than that in a connecting flight.
While Portland is a small city, the harbor is interesting. Just a short distance out of town are scenic lighthouses, rocky coastal views. The city itself has some nice restaurants and cute shops. I am not the fan of the art museum, but others here disagree - an option if it rains.
