Boston restaurant for a special occasion
I am looking for a special evening out for my husband's birthday later this month. Ideally, I'd like a place with excellent food and live music -- either part of the restaurant or nearby. We've been to the Regatta Bar and Scullers and I'd like to find something different. Any ideas?

By all means, this is a lovely special ocassion restaurant. It is upscale Italian and won one of the "Best of Boston" awards recently. See their website at: www.sorellinaboston.com . I LOVED it.

We have enjoyed several good meals and music at the Beehive, but I wouldn't chose it for a special evening out for a birthday - but you might - different strokes - check out the menu online, and if you do go, reserve one of the tableclothed tables 'inside' the stage area vs. one in the bar area - those tables are small, the chairs (for two seating) are usually the smaller bistro type, not necessarily conducive to a long, leisurely meal for a large guy - and ask what time the music starts (I think usually 9 or 9:30) and plan your meal accordingly.
How about Hamersley's Bistro (which is next to the Beehive) and then the Beehive - or, for after drinks and music the Oak Room at the Copley which is a short walk from Hamersley's (or eat also at the Oak Room which has one of , if not the, best steak in Boston) - Oak Room has music - light: or walk to the Taj bar on Arlington St which has jazz on Friday and pianist on Saturday -
Other choices for special evening for me would be Excelsior (and you can walk to music at Taj or any of the others and more) Mistral (owned by same who own Sorrelina another great spot mentioned) ...
check out opentable.com to see what is open for the night you are interested - if it is not showing, I always call since the restaurant often holds back a few tables for regulars, call ins even if not noted as such on the open table page.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I also had concerns about dining at the Beehive on Friday night as I wanted somewhere romantic and quieter -- Hamersley's Bistro sounds like a super idea followed by music at Beehive. I'm getting closer to making a decision, thanks to everyone's feedback.

If you want to hear music you may want to have an alternative to the Beehive. It can be very crowded with long waits on the weekend.
There is a hotel bar/restaurant at Copley Plaza that has a piano player or trio most nights.

The restaurant at the top of the Prudential Center has excellent food, a superb view of Boston and stellar musicians who are faculty at Berklee College of Music. A romantic destination, for sure!

Gabi7: This past weekend we were at both the Oak Room bar and the Taj bar - and were lucky to get a table at the Oak much faster than the Taj, where we waited quite awhile.
When we finished dinner at Hamersley's the line for the Beehive was about 25 long - no table reservations there unless you are eating-
all things for you to consider. Maybe Top of the Hub guarantees you the music/seat.... you might want to make some calls -
Or maybe if you ate at the Oak Room they will take care of helping you get a table in the bar w/ the music after....
