Is it safe for a pedestrian to walk from the Long Wharf (north) ferry terminal south along Atlantic Avenue about a half mile?
Or is it all expressway-type traffic?

RV trip - Iowa to Alaska

Sure
Agree - curious - where are you going. Not much elseon Lond Wharf except Marriott and can't think of much along Atlantic Ave in that area - but things are changing monthly in that area, so that is why I am curious.
We just drove in the other day and it seems to me that the area you cite has continuous sidewalk along that stretch but also, of course, heavy traffic---not expressway, altho there is an expressway down ramp entrance across the street on one side. Are you walking to the new Intercontinental Hotel?
To Gail & Socialworker;
The tentative plan is to take the ferry from the airport to Long Wharf (north)ferry, then walk to the Alamo rental car office at 270 Atlantic Avenue. This is located south of State Street.
We refuse to pay more than double for the privilege of renting at the airport location.
Just walk along the Rose Kennedy Greenway. It's where the old I-93 used to be - now a beautiful stretch of gardens and green space. It stretches from North End all the way to South Station.
Clamchowder. First, the walk will be closer to a mile, since fery stops at end of Long Wharf - I just checked Mapquest distances and it says .65 miles from Marriott Long Wharf - but then you need to add a bit since it is a hike from the ferry pier - not a bad walk, just be aware.
"We refuse to pay double..." This may not be true. I just went to Alamo website and entered random dates of 11/13-18 and looked at Economy car for that time period (without added insurances, but including taxes, airport fees, etc - everything you must pay) It would cost $249 to rent from downtown location for that time period and $253 to rent for same period from airport location. If you add MBTA fare, it costs MORE to rent downtown.
Perhaps your dates are such that there is a much higher fee at airport - perhaps a holiday time, weekend/weekday differential - but although many here complain about the extreme price differences in on and off airport rentals, I do not usually find that - and in this case for these random dates, it just is not so.
And I have rented at that Alamo office 4 times and it is always understaffed! And once they closed up shop 1/2 hour before the time stated on the door...making it hard to return our car. Unless you're really saving a lot, I'd say save yourself the long schlep and rent at the airport location.
An additional caveat to the above....when we rented from a city Hertz---as opposed to the arpt location in SFO, they were very low on inventory, i.e cars!! Were it not for our Gold Club status, my husband would have had to wait for 2-3 hours for someone else to return a car. They only had 1 vehicle when he was there, and there were 4-6 other people waiting for cars.
