Boston Bars

Hi,

Will be traveling to Boston and would like a great bar to hang out in with friends. Would like a great, casual authentic atmosphere.

Heard McCarthy's Bar and Grill is good - is it?

Any help is appreciated.

Head to The Sevens on Charles St. in Beacon Hill. Great spot.

Yeah, The Sevens is good. Also, the Black Rose off of Fanieul Hall, which is definitely on the touristy side is still enjoyable on any night besides Friday and Saturdays. You can get a table and listen to the Irish bands play.

It's kind of hard to recommend a bar without knowing a few more details of what you are looking for, i.e., live music?, age group?, cigarbar? But since you asked specifically about McCarthy's I ran across this description from digitalcity.com/boston:

McCarthy's Bar & Grille
903 Boylston St.
Boston, MA 02115
617-867-9090

On a block of Boylston Street where the bars are aplenty (Whiskey’s, Dad’s Diner, Cactus Club) and the competition is fierce, McCarthy’s Bar & Grille is arising as the most popular of the bunch.

Combining the polished-wood décor of an Irish saloon with modern amenities like TV screens and Top 40 tunes, McCarthy’s continually draws a lively crowd of twenty-somethings. Don’t expect the most diverse crowd in the city. This is, after all, Boylston Street in the Back Bay, an area where the preppy look tends to be prevalent. But McCarthy’s is still one of the coolest places in town to go with a group of friends, as the energy is always high.

Most of the crowd mingles around the main bar on the first floor and often convenes on the makeshift dance floor for some makeshift dancing. But the music and action stops when famous scenes from such movies as 'Top Gun,' 'Happy Gilmore,' 'The Blues Brothers' and 'American Pie' show on the many screens. These funny and exciting movie clips always break up the action and reinvigorate the crowd. A great idea.

Upstairs, there is another bar and places to sit. Good thing because McCarthy’s needs all the space it can get. The bar gets crowded starting on Thursday night and as for the weekends, well, you’d better expect to wait in line. But once you do get in, great tunes, cold beers, fun people and good times await you. -- Shane O’Neill

TIP: McCarthy’s isn’t as laid-back as its fellow Boylston Street bars. That means no baseball hats or sneakers allowed.

I haven't been to this bar myself so I can't recommend it. But perhaps this description will help. And the digitalcity site is a good one for lots of reviews and descriptions.
