Trip Ideas
We did a "sunset" boat ride on Lake McDonald, hopefully to see some wildlife along the lake shores. The boat went right down the middle of the lake and there was no way you could see animals without binoculars. It was a nice ride, but overall disappointing to our family.
DH and DD did a boat trip across Two Medicine Lake (just to get to a hiking trail). DD said the ride was "OK" and there was commentary that gave a lot of info about the area, including a good story about the naming of Rising Wolf peak. Cost was $11.25 RT. They booked it an hour before the trip started, but I think you would need to book the trips at Many Glacier and Lake MacDonald much earlier because they are more heavily visited than the Two Medicine area.
You can see my recent trip report for all the details (http://www.fodors.com/community/united-states/glacier-np-excellent-1st-time-trip-for-family-of-4.cfm), but we did the Two Medicine Lake ride (to Twin Falls), the Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine rides to Grinnell Lake and the Lake McDonald "cruise." Our family of 4 enjoyed the 1st two as they made the hikes more reasonable for us and were generally informative. I agree that the LM trip wasn't much to shout about.
I think we booked the same day or maybe the day before without any issues.
