This summer, we'll travel from Washington DC to Atlanta via the Blue Ridge Parkway. We've got three days, and thought to make a stop in Roanoke and Asheville. Can anyone recommend a good hotel, motel, B&B,... (quite unexpensive) in either place? Any piece of advice about this trip is also most welcome!
Blue Ridge Parkway; stay in Roanoke and Asheville?

1st time to Kauai! Will not be the last!

Near Asheville on the Parkway itself at Mt. Pisgah is a very acceptable motel.
The Mount Pisgah Inn I believe is the name of the establishment. Great views, good enough food in the dining room.
We have stayed there several times and plan to return in a few days.
Be sure to stop at Mabry Mill which is on the Atlanta side of the parkway from Roanoke. Also, detour to Mount Mitchell. The approach road leads directly off of the Parkway north east of Asheville. The North Carolina Museum of Minerals near Spruce Pine is interesting. The Moses H. Cone center near Blowing Rock is a craft shop nowadays. And as you approach Asheville be sure to stop at the Folk Art Center. It has a very nice collection of handicraft items from the retion.
Opp.s forgot. Linville Falls down the road a few miles from Blowing Rock is a very nice diversion. The falls are scenic if not spectacular.
After you leave Mt. Pisgah, look for Devil's Court House on your left. A little farther on toward the Smokies, Waterrock Knob is a worthwhile short walk to the top. Great encompassing views. There are many other places to visit that I can mention. These include Craggy Gardens and Crabtree Falls. Three days might not be enough!!
Have a good trip.
In Asheville, the Biltmore, a grand house and the largest residence in the US. It is magnificent as well as the gardens and has a wonderful tour on your own with a tape. An excellent restaurant and smaller cafe. Certainly a plus for any vacation.
