Is the Fall a good time to visit Block Island? Any foliage worth viewing? We were thinking of exploring the nature preserves and brisk walks along the beaches. Any feedback would be appreciated. Also, is the shelling anywhere on Block Island any good? If so, where?
And regarding the ferry, if we drove to New London or even Newport, how easy would it be to take the ferry over from either point? Would we need reservations and what is the approximate cost with our car? Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated!

I'm not a Block expert, but here's my 2 cents. Block is VERY quiet in the fall (more so than the Vineyard and Nantucket, which in itself is saying something). I do not think (though am not sure) that there is a ferry to Block from either New London or Newport. THe one I'm familiar with, and I'm pretty sure that even if there are others its the only one that takes cars, leaves from near Point Judith.
I think shelling is bad for the environment - too many people take shells that have living creatures in them. That said, none of the New england islands are particularly good for shelling.
In general, if you are planning to bring a car across to one of the islands, it will be a) expensive, b) difficult - reserve in advance, even during the fall, and c) not usually necessary. It depends on what you are planning on doing on island. Most are best seen on foot or bicycle. Mopeds are generally abhorred, and quite dangerous to people unaccustomed to them.
Cheryl,
Fall would probably be a nice time on Block Island, but it is a small island. Not really known for great foliage. The ferry I'm familiar with leaves from Point Judith in RI on a very frequent schedule and does take cars but you need to book in advance. I believe the ferry from Newport only goes a few times a day and may not take cars. I'd suggest a search for a travel site for RI would help.
Cabs are plentiful on the island and the last time I visited would take you anywhere for a flat fee of $5.00. We always used bicycles and found that a great way to get around the island. If you go after Oct. 9th Columbus Day week end some of the shops and restaurants might be closed.
