My husband and I will be going to Block Island in May. We are looking for recommendations for:
(1) Places to stay - Romantic
(2) Places to eat - We like good food
I have looked at the basic web sites. I need some personal feedback.
Many thanks!

For great accomodations and great food I would highly recommend The Atlantic Inn. They are by far and away the best on the island. Manisses and 1661 Inn used to be but they've gotten so old, dirty and tired over the years. Eli's is another good restaurant for an alternative, offering fun, creative pasta (not your basic Southern Italian stuff). Winfield's is also good for food. The BeachHead is great for local color...The Oar for drinks and a sunset...or pack your own and head out to Mohegan Bluffs overlook for unbelieveable vistas and sunsets.
The weather can be a little iffy in May...so checking out the Block Island Chamber of Commerce website would be good for rainy day alternatives.
My husband and I were married there 10 yrs. this Sept. and we return both with and without kids every summer.
THANKS! I think we may stay at the 1661 becuase I will be 6 1/2 months pregnant and I was worried about the hill the Atlantic is on. Your food suggestions are FAB!!!!
Anyone else?
Check out the Hygeia house, hygeiahouse.com. My wife and I walked in and asked if we could see some rooms and the owners were very friendly and the rooms very nicely done over. They would have a room that you would be looking for. They are about a half mile outside town, but bring your car so you can see the island. Also the weather might be a little chilly in May. The last post was right on the mark with the Restaurants with Eli`s being my 1st pick. If its a nice day you can get the dinner to go and find a bench with a great view. The portions are large so we always share a dinner. For breakfast try Bethanys at the airport. Thats were the locals go and you can watch the planes coming and going
While you will be going at the beginning of the season, you may be interested in the recent travel article about Block Island in the winter in the New York Times -- Feb. 13.
