Looking for something with good food and ambiance for a girls night b'day celebration. Any thoughts on Oystercatchers or other options would be much appreciated. Something special in St. Pete would also be ok.

I think Oystercatcher's would be great. Some other ideas are Ocean Prime (an upscale chain, but a good one, at International Plaza, with a hopping bar), or Sidebern's (modern fusion in Hyde Park). Mise en Place is very good, but more quiet and clubby; Bern's is a nationally famous steakhouse, but somehow I think the atmosphere would be a bit stuffy for a girl's night birthday bash. Hope that helps!
I'm not familiar enough with St. Pete to give ideas, maybe someone else will chime in.
NewBe! You've been missed!
. The food is very good and you can't beat the location!
Mclaurie, I love Oystercatchers, although I think they detracted from the ambience with their renovation a few years back. Still it's fun, loud, good food, just not as 'Florida-looking' as it used to be. It overlooks the bay and has a nice deck where you could eat as well. Disclaimer, my husband ran that hotel when we lived in Tampa, but I have no stake in recommending it. He is retired!
In one of your other threads I talked some about downtown St Pete (different from St Pete Beach). We love eating out at one of the restaurants on Beach Drive...Parkshore Grill is a current favorite. Like 400 Beach Drive, and Ceviche as well. I love what has happened to downtown St Pete--it just gets better and better!
I wanted to report we didn't go to Oystercatchers because of their lousy reservation system and poor attitude. We phoned the day before to book a table and after waiting on the phone for a while, got a recorded message that said to leave a message. We left the date/desired time and number of people and phone number. That was about ~8 pm. The following morning at 11 am having heard nothing from them, we phoned and again waited forever for someone to pick up. When someone finally did, she was annoyed that we'd phoned again and said "I was going to call you. We don't have 7 pm, you can have 6 or 8:30." (A take it or leave it attitude) Since neither were acceptable to us we said never mind and hung up. We booked something else and on returning after spending the day out, there was a message on the phone confirming our reservation! We called back to say no, we weren't coming and again got a recording and were asked to wait and wait and wait. Maybe they have so much business they don't need any more.
We wound up going some place not as posh and not on the water but had a fun time. BTW, we had a pleasant lunch at Bon Appetit on the bay in Dunedin one day. Very nice. http://www.bonappetitrestaurant.com/outside-bar/
