birthday dinner for college son in Boston
Hi,
My son is in college in Boston. I would like a recomendation for a fun place that I can take him and a group of his friends (4 0r 5) for his birthday dinner.
Looking for something that would be really a fun time.

Ther's a place called fire & ice that looks pretty nice. You select your meat or seafood vegges, pata or rice & they cook a meal to order.
Medevil Manor used to be a fun place for late teens early 20's. If you want to go more traditional try Legal Seafood

Fire & Ice is a good choice because it can provide something for everyone except the strictest vegetarians (and maybe people with allergies). But commuting and geography are an issue -- do you mind telling us which school he's at? What type of food does he like?

He is at BU in Boston, but I imagine that we could get to Cambridge without too much trouble.
Not sure that I am ready for Hooters, though I know that he has been there many times!
We actually went to Fire and Ice last year for his birthday and it worked out well. I was just hoping for a different option.
I will look into Medival Manor. Sounds interesting!I will also check out Summer Shack and East Coast Grill.

I took my son and his friends (years ago) to a Greek restaurant in Cambridge thta had belly dancers. They had a great time!! It was all good fun and the dancers kep their clothes on!
Not sure who has them now - the place was called The Averof. Maybe someone else on this board can suggest a restaurant with belly dancers.

In Park Square, go to Maggiano's Little Italy! The food is great and they serve FAMILY-STYLE for parties of four or more (PLENTY of food). Great atmosphere, good location. If you have a car, park in the Motor Mart Garage above the restaurant. They validate at Maggiano's so your cost will be about $5 rather than the $15 valet out front. Enjoy!

I am trying to think of a good place that he might not be likely to go to on his own - maybe someone else can help out if we try to think in that direction. I remember there is a Brazilian (I think) grilled meat place in Cambridge where they bring all sorts of meats to table on skewers. I know that is annoyingly non-helpful, but I hope someone else remembers the name.
Summer Shack in Cambridge (near Alewife MBTA stop) is a fun, informal place for seafood - lobsters in a big tank in the middle of the place, chef Jasper always visible in kitchen. Might they like Dim Sum in Chinatown?

The place I was thinking of is called Midwest Grill (they have a website at midwestgrill.com). They have a buffet plus waiters walk around with skewers of grilled meat. Have not been there in years, so can not give current evaluation. You could also try phantomgourmet.com and go to their restaurant search feature. I am always skeptical of print or internet recommendation sites, because there often seems to be some financial incentive for good words to be said about a place - but we have found this site (and show) to be reasonable accurate. At the very least, you get names and addresses of many restaurants by location, type, etc.

I think the Middle East in Central Square (cambridge) has belly dancers. It may be too crowded for a celebration of this sort. It's really more of a bar. You might want to try Dali (Inman Square, Cambridge). It's a fun, loud Spanish restaurant with great ambience, tapas, and sangria. They also have a fun way of marking celebrations. It does fill up fast so see if they'll take reservations (I think they only do this for larger groups).
