Biloxi, MS travel plans

Planning a mother/daughter Biloxi trip mid Oct. We will be without a car and staying at Beau Rivage in Biloxi. We have a spa day planned but would also like to go Outlet Shopping in Gulfport. Is there taxi service for this distance, not sure exactly how far it is? Or would it be better to rent a car for the day? Does anyone have any dining experience to share for this area?

We stayed there in May '05 (so obviously there have been some changes), but we very much enjoyed our stay. It's a really lovely hotel, and we had a good time. At least at that time there was a shuttle bus that went up and down the sea front, ferrying visitors to and from casinos. I don't remember if it went all the way to Gulfport, though. One thing we did that we very, very much enjoyed was take a day tour to New Orleans. I don't remember the name of the company, but both our guide and the local city guide were great, and it was very, very easy. I'm not much help with dining, since we mostly ate in the hotel's restaurants (especially the buffet, but we were impressed with the quality of it). We tried the Grand Casino's buffet one night, and just didn't like it nearly as well.

My experience also was pre-Katrina, but I'll second that the buffet at Beau Rivage is very good! I was staying in Long Beach with relatives, but they made a point to have us go to the casino just for the buffet.

If you do make it to Long Beach, there's some terrific coffee and pastries at Bank House; it's just a few blocks up from Beach Boulevard/Route 90:

Mary Mahoney's Old French House is an institution, and worth its reputation IMO:

Sadly, the few wonderful eateries I knew in the area did not survive Katrina, so I don't have more rec's. You could try reading the reviews on Yelp...

Thanks for the information. I understand the Beau Rivage is a great hotel with that Las Vegas feeling. AND look forward to having a spa day at the BR and maybe finding transportation to Gulfport for some outlet outlet shopping.

All though this reply is past your trip date for future reference, I own a Taxi Company...Exclusive Taxi and we do a flat rate to the outlet mall from the Beau Rivage. I hope you enjoyed your stay on the coast and I second ggreen's suggestion of Mary Mahoney's....unique dishes that are wonderful! Especially there Sister's of the Sea dish...my favorite! If you are returning to our area we can be reached at 228-861-3274 for special rates.

We just returned from a week long stay in Biloxi/Ocean Springs. We actually drove 13 hours to get there so we didn't need a taxi. The beach drive is so nice...and if you want to see what's in the area, I recommend renting a car so you can go where you want and when. Our daughter lived in Gulfport/Biloxi for 5 years so we are familiar with the area...but Katrina totally devastated so much so lots of places are no longer in business. While the casino buffets are good, if you visit the area, I suggest you go to local places to eat. Just some are: Mary Mahoney's; High Cotton Grill (for big plates of yummy seafood at pretty good prices), The Shed in Ocean Springs for BBQ; and a visit to the Blowfly Inn and Lookout 49 is always a treat; Aunt Jenny's Catfish in Ocean Springs. If you rent a car and have the time, drive Highway 90 all the way to Waveland and then get on I-10 and go to New Orleans....and while there get a wonderful shrimp po-boy at Johnny's Po Boys on St Louis street/New Orleans....they are big enough for 2 people. If you want to gamble in Biloxi, I found the IP casino had the best pay-out on slots and was the most friendly casino.....the Beau Rivage had the worst pay-outs every time I went there. The Hard Rock is a fun place but loud....and smokey....the beds might be nice, but we found the rocking music can be heard in the rooms. Shopping is pretty limited in my estimation.....there's the Edgewater Mall...which is just a typical mall setting but I have always found nice things there. I've found some antique places scattered through the Biloxi/Gulfport area but you really would need a car to hunt these down. The village shops in Ocean Springs are delightful. We really love to vacation in the area and will be returning in March as well as next October for the car cruise. This last time we stayed in Ocean Springs....at the Holiday Inn Express which has a nice breakfast and the rooms are clean....and coffee and cookies all evening in the lobby. Hope your stay is good. Have fun. Hope this info might add to your stay.

travelingon: For dining recs, I second most of the suggestions made by cadalackjack.

My mom lives in Biloxi, and when I visit we usually go to High Cotton Grill in D'Iberville (across from Wal-mart just off the interstate), the Blowfly Inn in Gulfport, and The Shed BBQ in Ocean Springs. Mary Mahoney's is a local institution but I haven't been there in awhile and lately reviews have been mixed.

I would recommend renting a car for ease of getting around. The downtown Ocean Springs area has a lot of cute little shops and boutiques for browsing around, and there is a Walter Anderson store (a famous local artist) at the old Depot.

Thank's all for the current information! Definately try IP Casino for the slots. Still undecided about renting a car...we'll be staying at the BR and one day will be a Spa Day so that would only leave one full day for shopping, etc.
