Big Island-Worth Visiting?
Out of the 3 Hawaiian islands we would like to visit, not so sure about spending time on the Big Island of Hawaii. What would be some of the best attractions that we should not miss here? How many days would we need here if we are planning to also visit Maui and Kauai? We are middle age couple with no kids and will have about 14 days. thanks....

The Big Island is my favorite. The volcano is a must--a live, active volcano sending forth lava is a sight not to be missed. Give it at least 2 days. The Place of Refuge is also interesting, as is a drive through the coffee country.

IMHO, think you will be fine doing 3 islands with 14 days. Would probably only spend a few days on the Big Island as it is large and involves more driving , but it is the only Hawaiian-island where you may have a chance to see active lava flowing.
Big Island Favorite Activities:
1. Volcanoes Nat'l Park (maybe red hot lava at end of chain of craters road, Thurston Lava Tube)
2. Snorkeling Boat Trip to Captain Cook Memorial, on Fairwind II or Sea Quest Raft from Keauhou
3. Snorkeling at Honaunau, visit ancient Hawaiian park next door: "Place of Refuge"
4. Waipio Valley Overlook/Tour
5. Akaka Falls and Hawaii Tropical BotanicalGardens.

We spent 10 days on the Big Island, and it was just amazing. We could have easily spent 14 days and still not have been able to do everything! Volcano National Park is not to be missed. You have no idea how breathtaking it is until you see it for yourself!

Sorry, but for me, Oahu has more of a big city feel than the other Hawaiian islands. The Big Island is rugged and it is still being formed due to the volcano eruptions. But it is no less beautiful than the others.

Kauai is the oldest island - lush; the Big Island is the newest - more barren in places, but much variety. With 14 days, I would consider sticking to two islands and then seeing two more next time! Oahu gets a bad rap due to the busy city feel of Honolulu but there is much more to it than that! You'll find that every island has it's big fans on this board. Maui has long been my favorite but it doesn't keep me from visiting the others every chance I get! I'm going to the Big Island next because there are some things I missed last time...

Wow trying to pick 3 islands! So much to see on each island.
Big Island...my list of must sees:
1. Volcano - hot molten lava flowing, and awesome sight. Plus viewing the miles of land that the lava has crusted over.
2. Waipio Valley - taking the Wagon tour in the valley and seeing the 1200' waterfall, and sometimes feeling the mist.
3. King Kamehameha Statue in Kapaau((the original King Kamehameha statue))Where King Kamehameha was born.
4. Mona Kea - standing of top of the mountain viewing the many observatories, looking "down" on the clouds below. What a sight.
Each island has it one and only sights, it's hard to decide. Good luck
Hawaii....it's all good!
