Aloha!
We are planning a day in Volcanoes National Park. We will be staying for several days on the Kona side before heading to Oahu. I am thinking of starting out early from Kona and spending the day in VNP before catching the late flight to HNL from HIlo. As we will be traveling in winter months, days will be short so we can see some of the park at night before flying out. The problem I have is this: where to store the luggage for 6 people? I understand that it is not necessarily safe to leave it in the van.
If there is somewhere to put the luggage, this option will work out well for us. I'd rather move on to Oahu that night as our time is limited. Also, I'd rather avoid driving back to kona at night. I've done it before, and once was enough!
Thanks in advance!

The hilo airport (on the way to VNP) doesn't have any storage facilities, but these guys are near the airport, and their site says that they do short term luggage and have 24 hour access; worth a phone call, if you're worried.
At night you can see the steam vent at halemaumau but any lava flow will be visible from Kalapana only if the vent is active when you are there.
The park is certainly well worth a visit; you will enjoy the flows, walking through Thurston lava tube cave, viewing the calderas, and if you want to take the time, the drive down Chain of Craters road. There are many interesting stops along that route, too.
If you stay past sunset, of course, you will be able to see the glow from the crater; be warned, it gets windy and cold.
We were in VNP a few weeks ago. We had all our luggage with us. We never felt that there was much risk of anyone stealing them. A thief would have to pay the $10 admission charge to get into the park. You are never too far from your vehicle unless you walk some of the longer hiking trails.
I agree; I would have no qualms about keeping the luggage in the car. Just take the usual precautions you would anywhere.
Thanks for the replies. I have been to VNP before, and felt quite safe. However, with 7 of us, the luggage will be visible from the van. That may be tempting fate a bit too much. I will check out stuff it storage. Thanks again!
Might you be able to check your baggage in with your airline
Whoops! My 'reply' got away from me! See about checking baggage in early. Are you all OK being 'homeless' for that long? There are some Plain Jane hotels in Hilo -- at the least you would have a place to store luggage and use the facilities.
