BICYCLING IN THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS

In October my husband and I are going to the San Juan Islands with our bikes on the back of our car so we can take ferries to different islands and ride our bikes around. We're hoping to stay in little quaint inns, eat in nice restaurants by the water, and have time to walk and bike around. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to stay, eat, etc? Thanks, Betsy

MY HUSBAND & I HAD THE GREAT PLEASURE OF TOURING THE ISLANDS A FEW YEARS AGO AND IT WAS ONE OF OUR GREATEST VACATIONS. WE DID NOT BIKE, BUT ON FRIDAY HARBOUR AT THAT TIME OF YEAR IT WOULD BE FANTASTIC. THERE ARE MOTELS & INNS RIGHT OFF THE FERRY IN TOWN AND ONE OF THE BEWT BAKERIES THIS SIDE OF EUROPE RIGHT BY THE FERRY. THERE WAS QUITE A FEW PEOPLE BIKING THE ISLAND AND IF I DID BIKE IT WOULD BE ONE PLACE THAT WOULD BE A MUST. THERE IS ALSO A QUAINT B&B ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ISLAND FROM THE FERRY BUT I CAN'T REMENBER THAT NAME - IT WAS THE SIDE OF SOME KIND OF CEMENT COMPANY AND WHERE YATCHS SAIL IN AND SPEND THE NIGHT - QUITE BEAUTIFUL. BUT OUR LITTLE MOTEL WAS NICE AND I AM SURE CHEAPER - ALL THE LOCALS ARE THE ONLY ONES ON THE ISLAND AFTER LABOR DAY AND WE VIRTUALLY HAD THE ISLAND TO OURSELVES. WE VISITED OTHERS IN THE CHAIN, BUT REALLY ENJOYED FRIDAY ISLAND MORE - SURE YOU WILL ENJOY.

although we did not have our bikes we hiked
all over San Juan Island & loved it. We stayed at a tun of the centry inn called Mariella Inn.
It is right outside of Friday Harbor. The rooms are lovely some facing the bay, and there are cottages as well. The dining room is open to non guests by reservation and is very good-lots of fresh veggies and fish.At the other end of the island is Roche Harbor with a very quaint-on the rustic side-hotel, Roche Harbor Hotel. I prefer comfort so we did not stay there but had a casual lunch.Have a great trip but remember the weather can be tricky-we had lots of rain in mid-sept. so be prepared.!

Re Orcas Island...whether or not it's a biking trek, get yourself to the top of the "mountain" with a few picnic fixings (from the local, you can't miss it, supermarket) and enjoy supper with a not-to-be-believed view and (hopefully) solitude.

ONe of our very best travel memories.

My husband and I loved the ORCAS INN on Orcas Island. It is so neat...a bakery/coffee shop downstairs that is terrific. Our room overlooked the area where the ferry came in and out and that was fun. We also liked Friday Harbor but wasn't crazy about the B&B we stayed in so I won't mention it!!

We also enjoyed Whidbey Island, particularly Deception Pass!
