Best way to get to and back from Lanai

Can someone tell me what would be the best way to get to Lanai from Maui? Also, we need to go from Lani back to Honolulu to catch a flight back to the states.

Is ferry an option to Lanai?

There is a ferry which runs between Lahaina and Lana`i:

The only way to get directly from Lana`i to O`ahu, is by plane.

Ditto the ferry option. Dolphins play just outside the dock where you'll be departing from on Lanai. It is also beautiful to watch them swim alongside the ship for a little ways going back to Maui. Just like an excursion without the extra expense

Just a small bit of advice. If you take the ferry from Maui and then fly to Oahu, make sure to check the luggage restrictions on your flight. We went to Lanai for a week last year and flew from Honolulu and then back to Honolulu on Aloha (which is operated by Island Air on that route). I had checked their website beforehand and knew that they had a very strict luggage weight maximum of 44 lbs. On our outbound flight, there were several people who had taken the ferry over from Maui and were apparently unaware of this restriction and had brought tons of luggage, golf clubs, etc. You cannot necessarily pay extra to have your extra luggage fly with you and it may be placed on a later flight. I believe Hawaiian has jet service to and from Lanai so they have less stringent baggage limitations. Just make sure to check so you don't end up like the people on our flight! Have fun!!!

Thank you for the advice about the luggage. My husband called and, your right, they did say 44 lbs. each. Well, we are not golfers so we won't be bringing clubs. I'll just have to watch when packing.

The ferry makes me terribly seasick... the waters can be fairly rough, especially at certain times of the day. I took Bonine and wore one of those accupressure bracelets, and still spent nearly 2 hours each way afterwards being ill.

My husband is made of stronger stuff, and did not have the same response, but admitted that it was a rough ride.

Just a word of caution. Also, Hawaiian Air no longer has jet service to Lanai. What a bummer!

The ferry is not ALWAYS rough - I've taken it back and forth several times and on all but one instance it was smooth sailing. But if you do get seasick easily, medicate yourself as desired (accupressure bands, medicine, etc.) and take a very early ferry - the water is usually smoother in the morning before the wind picks up. Have fun!

didi - just one more thing, you're catching a flight back to the Mainland...Hawaii has been a state since 1959
