Best way to get from D.C. to Dulles by public transportation?
Can someone outline my options? I am staying at the Washington Hospital Center, 110 Irving St., Washington D.C. 20010. I do have luggage, but would rather not spend a ton on a taxi. Is there a bus from Union Station, or are the only busses from L'Enfant Plaza and Falls Church?
Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

This is exactly the reason I refuse to fly in or out of Dulles.
The other 2 options are easier: Reagan National= Metro station.
BWI is a short Amtrak ride with a short free bus to the terminal. You can get to Dulles by bus but I think you have to make at least 1 transfer.
Unless it is a lot cheaper to fly where you want to go from Dulles, choose one of the other 2.
I flew into Dulles once and rented a car-never again.
The rental cars at BWI are cheaper as well.

I took the bus to Dulles only once but it was very easy from the Metro. I left from Roslyn; come out of the Metro and walk toward the stop where lots of people are standing with their luggage.
I agree with the other reply about BWI; it is an easy commute to DC Metro. That is something to consider for another time.

iregeo, The website for the Washington Hospital Center says there is a continuous/frequent shuttle running to the Brookland Metro Station which is on the Red Line. I'd take that to Metro Center and switch to the Orange Line for West Falls Church. At WFC you can pick up the Washington Flyer bus to Dulles for $10.
An alternative would be to take the Super Shuttle which will pick you up at the Washington Hospital Center and take you (and other pick ups) to Dulles. That's about $30. I haven't had issues with it but use it very infrequently. Others I know say performance is very mixed, late arrivals, drivers getting lost.

The Metrobus only option would be the 5A bus which you can pick up at L'Enfant Plaza or Rosslyn. In that case I'd take the shuttle to Brookland, change at Metro Center for the Orange Line which stops in Rosslyn. L'Enfant Plaza (on the Yellow Line) is out of your way.
I don't understand the Union Station part.

Iregeo,
I am assuming you already have plane tickets. If so, your best bet is the shuttle to Brookland Metro, transfer to Green Line at Gallery Place and exit Metro at L'Enfant. From there take the 5A bus to Dulles. The periodic Orange Line closures as mentioned above will be ongoing until the new Silver Line is built.
In the future, try as much as possible to fly into DCA (the convenience, time saved, and direct Metro connection more than offset the airfare savings (if any) of flying into BWI or (even worse) IAD.

Hi all. I ended up taking the free shuttle from the hospital to the Columbia Heights green line station. Took the green line to L'Enfant Plaza, and the 5a to the airport. Piece of cake! It cost $1.85 to ride the metro, and $6.00 for the bus fare.
I was in D.C. caring for my mother who had heart surgery last week. I was originally supposed to fly out of BWI, but had to change my travel plans and had certain limitations. This flight from IAD was my best option.
All's well that ends well!

Thank you, tenthumbs! My mom is a rockstar!!! At age 79, she received a new heart valve, and was released from the hospital only 5 days post surgery. We are all surprised but thrilled with the speed of her recovery. She went into a rehab facility yesterday and is expected home in about 2 weeks. Go mom!
